Summer Pre-College Art Programs

if money is an issue (and you live in the tristate area) you can always try out for Cooper Union's Outreach programs. they have one in the summer, fall, winter and spring.

My daughter attended the SCAD Pre-College (one week) program in summer 2006 and loved it. We were a bit nervous about sending a 16 year old New England girl to Savannah for a week, but she had a great time. She wants to be a Graphic Design major, and took Fashion Design and Web Design classes. She loved them and brought back new material for her portfolio. She felt safe, enjoyed the city and dorm life, and generally had a good time. She made good friends from a variety of places and returned with SCAD at the top of her college list. If you don't want to be away for an extended period, then SCAD provides some options.

MY daughter (sophmore in high school) is looking at different Pre-college art programs. SOmeone gave us information about the one in Kansas City. It is appealing to us as we have relatives there in case of emergency. Any one have opinions on this porgram?

Oh that is so funny.
We are considering KCAI for our D too, for the SAME reason. She kind of wants to go to SF, CA but there is no one we know to help her if there is a problem.

D met the rep from KC when she was doing NPR day. They really clicked and he encouraged her to look at their Pre-College too.

The website and brochures look pretty good, sorry I have no first hand knowledge.

Maybe our Ds will be there together. Mine is a JR. HS.

My d. also was impressed with the KCAI rep at the NPD in Atlanta. She is also looking at the KCAI program this summer (as well as several others).
Try and visit the school at the end of the program, it will give you a good idea of the atmosphere.
D. went to MICA's program last year and enjoyed it immensely. Plus we were very pleased with program and faculty.

Thanks for the info. My daughter is also looking at MICA so good to hear your daughter enjoyed it last summer.

I know it's been a while since mom of alex's post, but I went to the UArts pre-college for drama this past summer (I'm a senior, ED at Tisch now) and it was excellent. Although I wouldn't go there (their academic courses aren't the quality I'd want) their arts program is perfect for a summer. Anybody can pm me if they want any more info.

Hi, my daughter is also a sophmore. I have started looking at summer programs. I haven't been on the site for awhile and noticed that a post in November mentioned that programs at RISD are already filling up! I didn't realize we had to start so soon. Perhaps we will have to plan for next summer. I like the idea of the KCAI program not being as long as some others. We visited there last spring and were very impressed.

scoop, I did not mean to say that the Pre-College program at RISD is filling up now (I just don't know!). I just said that popular majors are filling up fast. I would imagine that at the beginning of spring next year everything will be available yet, but my daughter applied only in May...

Oh, I wish I had seen this post earlier.

I highly recommend anyone to apply to California State Summer School for the Arts - Innerspark (CSSSA-Innerspark) for the environment alone. It's especially cost-friendly to CA residents this year. Check out http://www.csssa.org

I've attended as a music major and a dance major, and all the times I went have been full of self-discovery, interesting collaborations, and strong friendships. The teachers and faculty are amazing, the environment is safe, the students are honest, motivated, focused, and extremely dedicated to their art. Feel free to ask me any questions.

My daughter went this summer to Pratt,Manhattan campus. She communted
as did all the other kids and she had a wonderful experience. She learned a lot and what she did she took to a interview at Cooper Union and they were
impressed. She took the fall program at Cooper then and really loved it,
and has been excepted again for their winter program. I know she really loved it at Cooper and she hopes to get excepted for the 4 years. She working on her home exam now and if anyone has any good advise let me know.....

My daughter is considering Pratt v. RISD v. Syracuse sresidential summer programs. Like worried mom's son, she has a limited art background. Her goal is to walk out of the six weeks with a portfolio she can submit with her applications in the Fall. She is leaning towards Pratt because it is closer to home and she loves NYC, but RISD has fashion and jewelry design as class options, both of which she loves. Anyone care to comment on the differences between programs, and strengths for helping one develop a portfolio ...her particular interest is fashion and possibly jewelry design.

I think your daughter should attend the RISD summer program... I took it, and I must say it was amazing. I had a great time, and they have alot of diffrent things to choose from... I don't know if your daughter has alredy gone since your post was from so long ago.

I was wondering if I could get some help. I want to take a pre-college program possibly out of the country, some where in Europe, possibly. Does anyone have any recommendations, or can they tell me where I should start looking?

W_d... [MISPOSTED]

My daughter did the RISD pre-college program and it was the best thing she could have done. She came frmo a high school with a weak art department, and sill needed several pieces for her portfolio. She not only came out of the program with a substantial portfolio, but also got a great taste of what art school is all about, including the time consuming work, the criticisms, the creative process and the busy schedule (not much time for a social life). From that experience she decided art school is for her and is now a happy Freshman at Mass Art.

Add this one to the Pre-College master list:

Maine College of Art Early College Program
MECA: Early College

I dont know if anyways talked about the FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) program yet, but that's what I've done the past few years. It's non-residential and only three weeks, but it was really the only affordable option for me since NY state residents get a discount since its a SUNY school it was only 250ish per course.

Anyone know anything about Wash Univ of St. Louis summer pre college art?

Hi. I'm brand new to this forum and discovered it doing a search for info on the Parsons pre-college program in Paris. My daughter wants to do it but I've got serious doubts to say nothing about the outrageous price tag. The first post in this thread was extremely helpful. I was wondering if there is more recent information about the quality of the program. I've been looking for more details in discussion groups and have come up empty and would appreciate links to other forums or sites with the real scoop that you all might know about. Thanks!
