I'm college a freshman currently taking the Gen Chem 1. I would like to take the Gem Chem 2 during the summer at my school bc the professor who teaches Organic Chem (who is quite brilliant btw) only teaches the fall-spring sequence (meaning that the Orgo 1 is only taught by her in the Fall).
If I take Chem 2 during the summer, I would be able to take Orgo 1 with her this fall--but are summer classes really looked down upon by MD schools?
I don't think Chemistry is difficult and I currently have a solid GPA in Bio and my other subjects, so I doubt they would assume I am taking it in the summer just for the sake of raising my GPA.

Any thoughts?

I only know that it is NOT recommended to take prereqs over summer. Just take Orgo concurretn with Gen Chem 2. They have almost nothing in common and as you said Gen Chem is very easy (it was also for my D., her easiest college science class). Be prepared to work very hard in Orgo though. D. has no experience taking summer classes as she took none. Maybe somebody else can help you more…

Thanks so much!!! I think that is what I will do since CHEM 2 is not difficult. Was your daughter also a premed student?

Depends on your college. Some Gen Chem 2 classes end the semester with a strong intro to Organic Chem.

But to answer your question, summer courses are frowned upon. (Better to use the time for EC building or a job.) But just one summer course is not likely to be a deal breaker, as long as you earn plenty of A’s over 3/4 years.

-Yes, she is MS1.
