I received great advice here for my first kid, who was interested in composition--now I'd like to solicit advice for my daughter, who is interested in jazz singing. Any suggestions for a summer program for her? (She's a high school sophomore.) The only one we know about so far is Interlochen, but we have no idea if she'd be able to get into a competitive program like that.

If you are in California—CSSSA Innerspark at Cal Arts. They do accept a limited amount of out of state.

There are week-long programs offered by both University of North Texas, and Western Michigan University. These are both two of the leading jazz vocal programs in the country. They could give you a taste of what college-level jazz vocal would be all about.

My recommendation, however, would be the New York Summer Music Festival (nysmf.org). The woman they have running the jazz vocal component is topnotch, and is a wonderful educator, especially with the age range you’re talking about. (You would want to sign on for additional private lessons with her if you end up enrolling) For jazz vocalists, you not only have the option of private lessons. There is also a jazz choir (by audition). Plus there are jazz combos, of varying skill ranges. It’s a great first exposure to jazz, especially in terms of nurturing young talents in the arts of improvisation, and stage exposure.

My daughter anticipates returning there this summer, which would be her fourth! Besides the plusses of the faculty and program, it’s a great bargain. It’s not a camp setting, like Interlochen. It’s on a SUNY campus (Oneonta) … but the kids seem to be tight and have a good time.

No help from me, as I know nothing beyond the collective wisdom of the board.

A bit more NYSSA info:

Hunt—
I’ve been thinking about the generosity of Herb Alpert and just remembered this opportunity (also funded by Mr A)

[Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony - University of the Pacific](http://web.pacific.edu/x19743.xml)

We saw a performance by a bassist/vocalist who had attended the Brubeck Colony (she was also a Presidential Scholar), and she was astoundingly good.

Hunt, if you are on the West Coast, you may want to research if there are summer learning availabilities with:
Sacramento State. Kerry Marsh runs the VJ department there, and he is a rising star in the field.
Wherever Michele Weir teaches, USC or UCLA. She is probably the pre-eminent VJ educator in the country right now.
Wherever Jennifer Shelton Barnes teaches. She’s a top performer/educator.

Just google their names, I believe they all have web sites that should include learning opportunities with them.

What we’re learning so far is that there are quite a few one-week vocal jazz programs in various places, but not too many that are longer. Interlochen’s jazz program is three weeks.

Berklee has a five week summer program.

NYSMF is six weeks, divided into three two-week sessions. You can attend one, two or all three.

Google also “Jamey Abersold”. He runs a line of jazz camps, I think out of the University of Louisville.
You could also check out Cannon Music Camp, offered through Appalachian State University. Their vocal program is not just jazz, but that is not necessarily bad for a young vocalist; their VP faculty is well-regarded. Their jazz component is led by the main guy at UMiami, and he is supposed to be terrific.

Also check University of Miami in FLA.

If I understand it correctly, Berklee’s five week program costs about $7,000 if you need housing. That was a bit of an eye-opener.

^WOW—Do you think it’s to “prime the pump”. To get you accustomed to their hefty music school tuition?

Just for anybody else interested in this topic–Interlochen does not have vocal jazz this summer.
