mckx, who told you that?

My friend that went to the summer program. She was told that the previous year that 20 out of 21 that applied got in. I don't think she was told this by the school, but probably by another student. Anyway, she is hoping that the summer program helped her chances. She has a 1480 SAT and 3.93 unweighted GPA.

Hey, man. I'm applying to Stanford for PreCollege, too. I'm also planning on taking Calculus. You should check out Harvard's program as well. It sounds great and you can dual enroll in two Calc classes.

If you want to study math, consider going to SUMaC instead. I went there last summer and it was AMAZING. It was a lot of fun, but you do get a good amount of work. You have 2 hours of class a day, 2 hours of study hall, and sometimes it'll take longer to finish up the problem set, depends how quick you are at math. You can do number theory or topology, both are really great programs. There are also several random math lectures by Stanford profs/profs from other schools as well as a research project that you will work on. SUCH a great experience. And I think it helps to get into Stanford... I talked to the Dean of Admissions (Robin) asking about it at one point, and she at least knew of the guy who's the head of the program. SUMaC is a lot of fun, I don't think anyone who went didn't enjoy it. Consider it instead of the other program at Stanford.

I'll definately consider it. I was hoping to be able to take courses in Calculus, though, so it looks like the PreColege programs are a little better suited to what I am hoping to get out of it. Thanks for the recommendation, though!

Why do you want to take the class in Calculus? If the answer is that you really love Calculus, then go for it. Or if there's some weird scheduling issue and you can only take a class at a local college like linear algebra or something AFTER talking Calculus, and there's no way to take Calculus, and you can't stand a year with no math... then take Calculus. Also, if you're especially interested in physiology, then I'd go with Stanford's summer program as well. Otherwise, SUMaC is a really really incredible experience and probably the better choice.

As wierd as it probably sounds, I do just love Calculus, I can't get enough of it. That's the main reason. I'm in BC Calculus now and I love it. I like to see that you're passionate about the program, though. It really speaks highly of it.

I think everyone is more or less equally passionate about the program. Seeing as I spent a month at math camp, I certainly don't think it's weird to just love Calculus. If you really enjoy it, then I say go for it. What would you do next year for math? There's a book I started (I'm only in like the middle ages, lol) called the History of Calculus and it's Conceptual Development. It claims to be one of very few books that really looks at the development of the ideas behind calculus. I thought it was really interesting to see where these ideas come from and how close yet so far people were to discovering calculus. It reminds you that Newton and Leibniz (however you spell that guy's name) had a LOT of help along the way.

I'll probably take a class at the big state U, it's only a little bit from my school and I've taken most of the high school classes except for Stats, etc. So I'll probably get out at about 10:30 and then go take some college classes.
