Summer Programs 2008

Re: NYSSSA- Sorry, I was just thinking Choral Studies, as that's what DD did last summer!

Ah, no MAW for me :( Didn't get off the alternate list. Oh well, next year I will try once more! They were super nice though about liking my recording and wanting to enroll me next year.

So sorry cosmos, but that's really encouraging. It's a very competitive program and you did well.

We're waiting to hear from Eastman about summer jazz--anyone have any experience with them and turnaround times?

My D got her acceptance into NYSSSA (orchestra) today for flute. Still waiting to hear back from Eastern Music Festival and Brevard, but don't expect to hear from them until April.

Still haven't heard from Yellow Barn... Does anyone know what the deal is with their notifications? (i.e. when then send them and whether it's by email or post).

Also... has anyone heard from the NSO/Kennedy Center program yet? I'm getting anxious about that one. Do they really only take one person per state? I'm from NY and there are loads of good people from my state. I can't imagine they'd reject good people just because they already took someone from that state.

NSO does only accept one student from each state. However, each year, there is a "sponsoring" state, and that state does get to send more than one student. My son was an alternate one year and didn't get called. Their mission is to have an orchestra which is comprised of the finest musicians...one from each state first. My guess is that the would only go into other options if they had difficulties with the instrumentation (no bassoons or something like that).

I think I remember hearing that NSO/KC program decisions are due to go out on March 21.

I would think it would be difficult to create a full orchestra with only one person per state + x number from the sponsoring state, unless they took really an inordinate number from the sponsoring state. They've done it in the past though, so I'm sure they have their methods.

Hi Cosmos,
They take one additional person from the sponsoring state, some number between 5 and 10 from other countries, and fill in the missing people with local HS students that commute in each day. D's year, they took 2 from NJ, although it wasn't a sponsor state. I have no idea why, but since we never discovered if D was the 1st or 2nd choice, we didn't press the question.

They do take a lot of local kids (we are local) whom they don't have to spend $$ to feed and house. This is probably how they fill in their sections.

Lucky you!!!!

Not necessarily - there's a lot of talent in this area and the competition is fierce because it's a well-known program.

Accepted to:
-Pianofest in the Hamptons-full scholarship and room+beard plus stipend
-Morningside Music Bridge Program in Calgary, Canada-full scholarship
-Fontainebleau International Music Festival in France-waiting to hear grant info.

ahh i dont know whether to go to morningside bridge or fontainebleau since they're at the same time. i think it depends on how much scholarship i receive from france. any suggestions??

No suggestions, just congratulations to you, perpetualmotion!
Good luck with your decision.

AHH! The agony of waiting!!

Congrats Perpetualmotion!
Cosmos, pick up the phone already and call them! At least just ask when you can expect to have an answer! You've heard of Chicken Soup for the Soul, well that would be Pepto-Bismol for the anxious.

I got into Yellow Barn!

It's the Young Artists Program, so it's not free, but I did get a call from the artistic director and he wants me to call him back so hopefully that's in regards to the fellowship program or to letting me go for free for some reason... Haha we can only hope!

Cosmos, congrats, but I'm a bit confused. There are seperate/different apps for each of the two YB programs. The Music School and Festival program is tuition free, and participants pay only R&B and runs five weeks. The Young Artists program is from ages 13-19, is tuition based , and runs for two weeks. Which one did you apply to?

I applied to both of them.

I'm a bit confused as to whether or not I got the fellowship... The director just called me to tell me that they need me to tell them as soon as possible about whether I can go so they can do their programming, but he was kind of unclear about the fellowship... I might call again and ask.
