Summer Programs 2008

Bachlover, or any piano person... can you compare Interlochen and NY Summer Music Festival piano programs? S is accepted to Interlochen (he called, we don't have a letter) but no financial aid decision yet.

We live one hour from NYSMF--the total cost of six weeks at NYSMF could be half of Interlochen. Can you compare the faculty, camp experience, student quality, and so on? Thanks!

Okay, so according to Murphy's law, now that we sent a deposit to NYSSSA for the school of orchestral studies, we'll hear back from Eastern Music Festival and Brevard. I really thought we would have heard from Brevard by now, since all auditions were done and paperwork in by March 1. EMP says by April 15th which is after the deadline to respond to NYSSSA.

My D just got accepted to the Opera Institute for Young Singers run by the Washington Opera. It's a three-week program conducted on the campus of Catholic University.

They study acting and opera history as well as having individual and group voice lessons. She's done summer programs at Westminster for the last four years so this should be a real change. She's really pumped!

Congrats Don9992! That should be an incredible three weeks. I really wish we would have pursued opportunities like that for my older d.

BEK-we meet again! We are waiting on Brevard also. An e mail we received stated they would let people know three weeks after the March 1 deadline. D has heard from two of the three camps she applied to so our two week deadline to accept has started!

S DID get accepted to Eastman's summer jazz program. After finishing our east coast school tour today, that was great news! Hopefully spending two weeks in a conservatory atmosphere will bring some clarity!

My daughter went to NYSMF as a vocalist, and intends to return this year; so I can help you in a few areas. NYSMF is on a college campus, not on a dedicated campground. So there's no recreational swimming, boating or daily organized sports activities. (Weekly outings are organized) No cabins, just dorms. It's more like an informal college experience rather than a summer camp experience.

The School of Music at SUNY-Oneonta had fairly good facilities; the contruction looked fairly new. The Dean there is working to build the reputation and quality of the music program; I heard absolutely no complaints about the condition of practice facilities, and the acoustics in the performance hall were fine. The faculty comes mostly from the New York - Philly area. Curtis, Manhattan School of Music, Westminster Choir, NYU-Steinhardt, etc. The emphasis is on classical genres, although there also is a strong jazz component.

I think a big difference between the two is that NYSMF puts a huge emphasis on giving EVERY camper on-stage performance opportunities; not just the most accomplished musicians. The way the administrators stressed that during their end-of-session speeches, I assumed that might not be the case at other music camps. The end-of-session concerts were terrific.

My daughter LOVED it. She's very serious about music, and isn't terribly interested in typical summer camp activities. So this was a good way to enhance her music knowledge/ability while getting her to think ahead to college.

BEK: I believe that you can get your NYSSSA deposit back until something like April 25 if you should want to. At least that's the way the paperwork read for Choral Studies.

WE heard from brevard last week for the new vocal program for HS. What do you know about the credentials of the programs for HS? We rode up there today and looked at the facilities. I wasn't overwhelmed. My D has also been accepted at Walnut Hill and we're still waiting to hear from Oberlin. If she get the scholarship at Walnut Hill, it's a given we're going there.

I saw this DC program but the dates interfered with a show my d is doing. I thought it looked great. Instead we are are either going to Walnut Hill, Brevard or Oberlin. Any input on these opera programs?

The admissions director at Brevard emailed me on Friday to say the orchestral decisions should be in to her this weekend and she will work to get them out via email in the coming week.

Musmom: Yes, you are correct, we can get our NYSSSA deposit back if we want. Unless there is a compelling reason to choose Brevard (if we are accepted), NYSSSA fits our calendar and our budget better. We know someone here in town who has done both programs and will pick her brains for opinions if we need to make a decision.

Have people made their final decisions yet about summer programs? We have that big list for school decisions, maybe we can make the same thing for summer programs... I will start us off.
