sounds like they were just looking for someone who played the other instrument. that’s rubbish though.

i’m really kind of annoyed about aspen though, because the bass teacher told me i was accepted, then they waitlisted me (for some reason), and i called him and he never called me back. really an immature response on the part of that teacher. ah, oh well.

Anyway, I’m hoping you can go to NSO and Yellow Barn, too. In my book, there’s nothing better than a focused chamber music program. (In a beautiful place).

You seem to have decided on your summer program, but if you still have an interest in Aspen, you might try contacting the director, Joan Gordon, about what seems a curious mixup – if the teacher selected you, it doesn’t make much sense to have waitlisted you. At least for piano, they have not made the final decisions.

Good advice mamenyu. It could well be a mix-up, communication issues, clerical error. Cosmos, if it bothers you, it would behoove you to try and clarify the scenario.

I sent an e-mail to the director, and she wrote back saying that they can’t always take everyone who’s admissible to Aspen because they don’t have the space. She said that she contacted the teacher in question and told him that they’d try to accept me off the wait-list.

I’m kind of sick of Aspen, honestly. I know a number of students who don’t have to audition and just get accepted straightaway because they study with one of the teachers there. Someone told me yesterday that Aspen’s a waste of time anyway because everyone just parties all the time and bugs you if you want to try and practice and be studious. Doesn’t sound like my kind of crowd. If they accept me off the wait-list, fine, but I’m going to the NSO program and I doubt I’ll bother with Aspen next year.

Cosmos, I hear your frustration. But think about it; Aspen would not get the great reputation it has if it didn’t produce results. Thumper’s S went last year and thought it was well worthwhile, and he’s not a partier. If it works out, and you have the money, go ahead and give it a shot. But it also seems like you have a great alternative. So I don’t think you can lose either way.

Cosmos, I’ll agree wholeheartedly with binx. At a program like Aspen you will always find like minded peers. Choose to party, or choose to practice, or any combination of the two, and you’re likely to find a group to fit your needs.

The aspect of teacher “ins” is apparent almost anywhere, and has pros and cons. I would also suggest that while you may have some negative feelings right now, don’t let one episode color your judgement of the program for potential future consideration.
