DD’s been back from New York Summer Music Festival for a week now. She had a great 6 weeks, and misses it already. If anybody’s child were interested in a music camp that offers a strong jazz component in addition to, or instead of, classical … NYSMF’s program is excellent. While it has moved D forward, in terms of ability, it still offers room to grow.

Hey guys,
Just finishing up at Banff orchestra residency today! It has been excellent.
Looking forward to applying again for next year.
Highly recommended to anyone looking for an intensive summer orchestra experience.

Does anyone know whether the excellent Bard Music Festival has a summer student program? Anything along the lines of a student fellowship orchestra? It would be brilliant to be able to study there during the summertime, but I didn’t see anything on their website about a student orchestral program.

Cosmos, here’s a link [bard conductors institute orchestra ::](http://bard.matthewbeaumont.com/). My understanding is that the orchestra is in fact a paid gig. My son was looking at year or two back, as a fairly local alternate to other performing festivals. Some of the links on the page are inactive, so I’ll try and recall the detail from memory.

As I remember, it is a paid gig, in service of the Conductor’s Institute for the duration. I think the participants had weekends free, and I don’t remember if the deal included housing or meals for musicians.

To the best of my knowledge the Bard Summer Festival [Bard Music Festival | The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College](http://fishercenter.bard.edu/bmf/) is not a pre-professional fellowship performance training environment. I believe it’s the summer series of the American Symphony Orchestra [American Symphony Orchestra](http://www.americansymphony.org/orchestra.php) under the baton of Leon Botstein. The orchestra roster is a cross section of a lot of NYC and environs pros.

It might not hurt to pm N8Ma for additional information or alternative contact info.

Great, thanks so much!! I will definitely consider applying for the Conductors’ Institute Orchestra next summer.

Cosmos,

I don’t believe there is any formal participation for students in the Bard Music Festival, but this was posted on the Bard Conservatory Facebook group page:
Bard Conservatory students perform on Program 11 of the Bard Music Festival: Wagner and His World Aug 14-23

So there are some student participants for part of the festival, at least. I agree that a PM to Nathan Madsen would get you the scoop on how unaffiliated student musicians could get involved.

Thanks! That is really cool.

Does anyone have any info on operanorth’s young artist program?

I would appreciate any feedback re the Eastman Music Horizons summer program for a singer. My daughter is 16 and high school junior. She is also applying to Tanglewood Young Artists and Westminster Choir School soloist program. She attended Walnut Hill summer opera two summers ago. Thanks!

SIngermom - my D also went to Walnut Hill two summers ago. Last year, she went to Washington National Opera Summer Institute and loved it. I would also suggest Oberlin’s summer program. In addition to the Oberlin in Italy program, they have one at the school.
