Summer Programs - Discussion

Falloffstage--is that 90 altogether, including video auditions and live auditions, or is it just live auditions? I thought the total number might be higher than that.

The admissions director told my mother that 90 kids were auditioning. (Do not know the context of "auditioning". Whether that means live and/or on tape...). She also told my mom that they were going to take 24 this year, with hopes of 12/12 or 14/10. The accompanist reconfirmed that for me as well.

There were 90 applicants in all, including taped auditions. At least, that's what I heard Dody say.

I auditioned for Michigan on Friday, too! I was going to get on last night and write about it but got side-tracked (of course, such a me thing to do!) writing to my voice teacher and calling friends to tell them how it went. But, I sure will say a bit now, since someone asked! :-)
Yes... it was very fun to be on the UofM campus (@ the school of music!!!)and nice to meet some of the other kids and chat a bit and encourage one another before our auditions. (Finding an available practice room to warm up in downstairs was quite the adventure, too! But, that's another story. lol)
If anyone who is going to audition tomorrow would like to email me or PM me beforehand, feel free to do so! Just to tell you a little (hope I'm not breaking any rules for giving this information on here): You go into a room and audition just for Mr. Brent Wagner. He is very nice, for those who don't know that (smile). He makes you feel comfortable - well, at least as comfortable as one can be at an audition - and is all smiles and very encouraging. He made a very good impression on me. He seems like a very cool guy, so don't be scared! :-)

Nick, what time did you have your audition? I might have seen you...? I was the blonde w/ the crazy, curly hair & pink outfit (lol). I thought that having that many kids (90) auditioning for the program this year was cool (I found out right before I went into my audition!) It's neat to have at least some type of competition, because it kind of simulates how it will be when we all are auditioning for the "real thing" next winter! (even though we are talking about a BIG difference in odds, numbers and ratio. but, still!)

If anyone else was there on Friday, speak out! I'd be interested to know who all on this board were there!

Best,

I'm new to the site... (tho my mother is not). But I just had to get in on the action myself. I auditioned at Michigan on friday (time slot 3:40) for Mpulse. What a wonderful experience! Can't wait 'till May to find out if I'm in the program... I want to see all the nice people I met at the audition again!

My audition was at 4 on Friday. I know it says we will find out "by" May 10, but does that neccessarily mean in May? I am hoping we will find out a lot earlier (as do many, probably.) Anyone know when applicants typically find out?

-Nick

My audition was @ 3:55 on Friday. Ok, so trying to put names to faces in my head; Falloffstage- were you the one who sang "You're the top"? & that belle- were you wearing a pastel-green colored sweater? I probably should have PMed this to you both, but I had to make my comment quick! PM me if you'd like to confirm that I am "right" or not w/ my guessing!
I am hoping we find out a lot earlier than May 10, as two months is a long time to wait!

My D auditioned by videotape. When I called to ask a few questions about putting the tape together, whoever I spoke to said they would review all the tapes at around the same time that people were auditioning in Michigan. She said that is why the deadline was March 15. It seems to me she said or implied (can't remember which) that it wouldn't be long before decisions were made. Like two weeks or so sticks in my mind. I hope we don't have to wait until May because my D has applied other places and would have to choose one before the May 10 date. But the UM program is her first choice!

Does anyone know about the summer stock on Cape Cod called College Light Opera Company? Any and all information would be appreciated.

Has anyone ever attended a session of Camp Bravo in California?

Does anyone know if notifications will come by e-mail, phone or mail?
Also, does anyone know how many of the 90 that are auditioning are guys and how many are girls?

I shared emails with the UMich staff today...I didn't ask the boy/girl question, but they confirmed that there are 90 applicants for 24 spots; 30 of those came via videotape. She said they would notify as soon as they knew something, that they had just begun the process of viewing the tapes and then they would evaluate all applicants and then mail out acceptances. My original question was asking if they might let us know earlier as so many of us have Ds/Ss with other options and need to make commitments prior to the May 10 deadline. Alas, she didn't budge on the May 10 date...but promised if they knew something sooner they would let us know.

I am trying to find a 1-2 week summer program for daughter, acting - singing etc. It does not have to be super intense . Would like New York. I looked up the Suny New Paltz and all I could find was info on 2004 and found nothing at Syracruse. I would welcome ideas and links.

Ithaca and Syracuse both have 3 week acting programs (syracuse's is MT or acting).

Ithaca also has a five week one in musical theater or acting.

ithaca.edu/summercollege

hope that helps

MTparent and 2DsnMT:

My S has attended the UMich Summer Program the past two years and we always received notification of acceptance by mail. Although the official date has always been May 10th, I recall receiving the notices earlier than that both years. I hope this helps. Good luck!

vocaldad

2-3 weeks would be about right for her. 5 too much..
I went to the Syracuse website and found nothing.
I tried to find out about Suny New Paltz and found nothing at the site.
And when I did an internet search on Stagedoormanor I got an internet error message several times cant find it.

So what I need is help on finding something in New York that would be beneficial (I think CA is to far for her to go alone) for a 15 year old pop singer/actress. that is not to late to get into.

thanks all..

Give this link a try for various NY college theater programs

Thanks Ablestmom..

Meantime what do you all think of Stagedoor manor..They are full already but for next year? They dont have auditions.seem laid back but it appears that Natalie Portman and others went there? What do you all think?

Dear Ablestmom-- My s went to Long Lake Camp (performing arts) in the Adirondacks for two summers. They hold three, 3-week sessions with musicals and straight plays in each session, along with circus acrobatics, instumental groups, choral and studio art. It's a good option and there are many talented kids. Our friends' d went to Stage Door Manor and liked it but it sounded comparable to LLC (and other programs such as Buck's Rock and French Woods). Some of these are quite expensive and, if they allow too large an enrollment, they may not be ideal for children trying to learn. Last summer, s went to Walnut Hill's summer theater program. It, like Interlochen, is more demanding than the performing arts camps. Walnut Hill offers a six-week program with classes in movement, voice, acting, etc and students are cast in two productions (one musical). See my earlier post on this. It might be something to consider when your d is ready for a longer and more challenging program.

Let me ask this..I like the idea of a laid back program..but D. does have a lot of training and experience. I talked to the director at Stage Door and she said they have a wide range there. But do you all think its mostly beginners? I would like her to be challenged. We would like New York area. She wants CA but at 15 I think she needs to wait another year before she goes out there by herself.
What is LLC..?
