Syracuse's program is 6 weeks. If you go to www.syr.edu, click on prospective students, then click on summer programs, then click on programs for high school, that should get you there. It runs July 3 to August 6 this year. My daughter is in the process of applying (just waiting for guidance office to finish their part) and they have rolling admissions. She is also 15 (will be 16 in a couple of weeks). She's a sophomore. They take mostly juniors, but will take about 20% sophomores typically I was told when I called. I was told yesterday that they take 32 kids and are close to full already so you'd need to hurry with the application. There is no audition. It is based on academics, resume, and recommendations. For Stagedoor manor, www.stagedoormanor.com is the website. They are already full for girls for all three sessions this summer. You might want to try www.frenchwoods. com. We have a friend here who is going for her second summer this year and loved it last year. I don't think it is the same type of program as a college program however. SU's program is pretty intense, but great training according to a friend who went last year. The kids get college credit for it. She was accepted to PSU, UM, and Syracuse which were the only schools she applied to, and felt the program really helped her get ready for auditions. It is also expensive, but so are Stage Door and French Woods. I think those are 3 week sessions rather than 6 weeks. My daughter was also accepted to New York State Summer School of the Arts for theater. This is held at SUNY New Paltz, so maybe this is the program you were looking for there. It is a 4 week program, but the auditions were in February. They only take 32 kids from the state. It says they can be currently 8th to 11th grade, but the director told me that in actuality, they almost never take kids younger than 10th grade (and this year my D is one of 2 or 3), the vast majority being 11th grade because they feel the program is too intense for younger kids. Our concern is that there is no singing or dancing, only acting. My D is not sure she can not dance for 4 weeks and be happy, but she really wants the acting training too. I called and asked for references yesterday and already have gotten great feedback from two girls who went last summer, so looks like it might be an option for my D. She also applied to UMich. by videotape (again too late for this year, the deadline was March 15th) but a thought for next year. Don't know anything about a program at Ithaca. There is also a 2 week program in Syracuse at LeMoyne College called Summerfame. You can get info at www. oswegoboces.org. We know several local kids here in Syracuse that have enjoyed it. You choose either dancing, singing, or acting focus. My daughter's voice teacher is the head of the vocal part, and a local director who works at LeMoyne is the acting head, and a local dance teacher that I don't know is the dance head. Not as intense, again, as the college programs. Depends on what you're looking for. Carnegie Mellon also has a very intense program from what I hear. If my D does the Syracuse program this summer, she will probably apply to CMU for next summer to get ready for college auditions. Not sure if they're still taking applications. Sorry this post is so long. Hope it helps for this year and maybe for next!

Dear Angst--

Long Lake Camp (http://www.longlakecamp.com/) is located on a gorgeous lake in the Adirondacks. I doubt they have any vacancies at this point but you could pursue it next year, along with Stagedoor. If your D is experienced, I think the Walnut Hill option is better than either. It's in MA, which may be closer than the Adirondacks, even if you're in NY! Walnut Hill may also be full for this year but you could check http://www.walnuthillarts.org/summer/theater.html

Last summer my D attended the 4 week long MT pre-college at UArts in Philly. The program was well organized with daytime spent in voice, dance or acting classes and the evenings with going to local tour shows or talent nights and so forth. They also took a trip into NYC to see a show. She lived in the upperclass dorm - 4 girls in a large apartment with full kitchen and bath. D had a real learning experience in dealing with living in the arts district downtown Philly. The downside was she did not feel the program challenged her enough. She thought many of the kids there looked at it as more of a summer camp vs. the intensive, pre-college she was hoping for. It is audition based and she was granted a half tuition, talent scholarship for the program which helped since we were out-of-state. She decided not to audition for UArts MT this year based on her pre-college experience, but some of the other kids loved it.

angstridden, if I'm not mistaken soozievt has given you detailed information in the past about SDM which is where her daughter has gone for many years. I can assure you that if her D and others my D at Tisch knows were challenged there, then your D certainly would be. If you've forgotten the information she previously gave you, perhaps you could do a search on SDM and find those posts. She is certainly the expert on SDM on these forums.

Anyone needing information on Syracuse's MT summer program. feel free to email me (manderbean@mac.com) I attended this past summer and had a wonderful experience! Don't let the lack of an audition fool you; itts pretty intense (classes from 9-5, M-F), and if you are going into your senior year they let you audition at the end of the summer. Anyway, if you have any questions, let me know!

Alwaysamom are you pointing out my bad memory? Its bad I guess. I have so much going on I very well may have missed something and I hope you bear with me if I did. I know Soozievt has mentioned tons of wonderful things her daughter has done including camp. I just dont recall her naming the camp. Though she well may have and I missed it or glossed over it as I was not reading for it.
I am glad to hear you feel my daughter would be challenged there. I would like her to have fun and be challenged and in a way I would like her to be in a camp as opposed to school environment. Next year she will be in the Advanced Music Studies at her school which is college level also, so I think she wants a lot of social stuff too.
Too bad the camp has no openings!

2DsnMT & Vocaldad,

Thanks for your quick reply!

Vocaldad, do you feel that your son felt the 2 week program was very intensive. If possible, could you give us a brief summary of a typical day.

Also, do you know if they offered admission to any students. It seems that on a former post concerning the CMU summer camp, a student mentioned that admission was offered to 1-2 top students at the end of the camp, and an invitation to audition was offered to some students, and a "thanks for coming to the camp" (without an audition invitation) was given to the rest.

Thanks again for your invaluable information!

On stagedoor manor, who teaches the classes?

MTparent and Nick:

The UMich Summer Camp is very intensive. I will have to talk to my S to get more details on a typical day, but it starts early and goes prety much all day with evening sessions as well. They do have some other get-togethers (a trip to a lake on one weekend day last year) and some non-rehearsal things, but it is mostly work up until the final show. Students audition for different solos for the show and are selected by Brent Wagner. Everyone is involved in the show, but some have more individual items than others. I'll try to get more information for you on this.

As far as being offered admission, I really don't believe this occurs, but my S is only a sophomore this year, so he really has not been in that position. Although I know in the past that some seniors were asked to attend after having already been admitted (the 2 I know of had done the camp previously), I don't believe that letters go out like they do from some other camps. That being said, my S was very aware that Brent was looking at certain students for possible future admission at UM, so it is a chance to "show your stuff" to Brent.

The program is definitely a worthwhile experience, but my S has not gone to others (he's applying to NYU Steinhardt this year as well as UM), so I can't really give you information on a first hand comparison. If he gets into both this year, I'll post regarding his comparisons of the 2 programs.

I hope this helps, and I'll try to get more information from my S for an additional post.

Again, good luck to all.

vocaldad

Although I am new to this forum (My D is class of 2006) I thought I would mention a great summer boarding program my daughter attended in Austin. The program is the new Texas Art Project (TAP) in conjunction with a local highly regarded private school, St. Stepen's Episcopal School. The campus overlooks Austin and is a very safe upscale neighborhood.
St. Stephen's has a respected "theatre focus" program and has recently sent students to BFA programs in Ithaca, Evansville, SMU etc. In addition their Musical and Acting Directors have worked with various students from local high schools who recently entered in MT programs at Webster, CMU, AMDA, etc. I only know about friends of my D's so I am sure there many more. I know this year's crop are awaiting decisions from many very competitive programs.
This is the third year of the camp, and according to the brochures I have received in addition to the Acting, Dance and MT programs, they have added several new majors such as filmmaking, play/screenwriting, and technical theatre. They also have added a second shorter camp for younger students.
My daughter has had the opportunity to work with many of these professionals through other venues and cant wait until next year when she is old enough to be considered for an internship there. The link is:

http://www.sstx.org/theatrefocus/

Hope this is helpful for some of you trying find a great summer learning environment.

U-Mich Summer Program

Vocaldad------Thanks once again for your very informative post.

Just to clarify----when you said some seniors who were already admitted were invited to the camp-----did you mean graduating seniors that had been admitted to the U-Mich Musical Theater program attended the camp after their senior year of high school, prior to their freshman year of college?

I appreciate your description of the camp, and am looking forward to any additional info you (or others) can give.

Good luck to your son on getting accepted to both summer programs. He must be quite talented to have been admitted to this program twice already!

Anybody heard from Interlochen? I'm still waiting with baited breath....:)

Angst...I replied to your other post on the thread you started regarding Stagedoor Manor and included a response there to the question you posed here regarding who teaches the classes at Stagedoor so please look there.

As AlwaysAMom mentions, I have discussed Stagedoor in extensive posts in the past and maybe if you do a search on this forum, something will turn up. In the post I wrote you tonight, I mostly aimed my response to your latest inquiries and not my general description of the program. Hope it helps.

To answer your question you posed elsewhere, yes, my daughter is signed up for first session this year and hopes to still be able to return for her last "hurrah" there, her 8th year, though normally goes for two sessions per summer.

The program has been sold out for girls since around last December so I imagine the waitlist has grown. I don't know if French Woods still has openings but this is on the late side for enrolling in these particular two programs.

In an earlier post, you referred to Stagedoor as "laid back" and I would say that it is the opposite of laid back. It is an intensive program. The kids are either in classes or rehearsing day and evening. The shows goes up in just 2 1/2 weeks' time once cast and they also have classes each day. As explained on my other post, some kids are ALSO rehearsing a second musical (a cabaret) during this same period of time. For kids who want a laid back camp experience, this is not it. For kids who want to be immersed all things theater, this is a place where many will thrive and enjoy.

Angstridden - check your private messages for another idea.

don't worry via interlochen.....for theater, you usually don't hear till about April 7th.....other majors have heard already, but none of my friends who applied to theater or voice heard yet...only instrumental
