Question: I am aware that cadets have approximately 9 weeks during the summer for summer activities (CST, Jump, etc.) split up into three, 3-week sections. One of these three weeks is usually free for the cadet to do as they please. If a cadet so elects, would they be able to use that free 3 week period to do something else that they may not be able to do any other time? Or does it not work that way?

Thank you!

Just an add on to Semper's question, are cadets allowed to request when they get to take their leave? I volunteer at a camp for kids with relatives in the MN Army or Air National Guard and I'd hate to have to miss out on it for more than a year or two. So can cadets request their summer schedules?

yes, you can request your leave period. you may or may not get it, though. and if you do get your requested leave, you probably won't get your other requested programs, lol.

good times! ;)

SE, i know you can opt for academics instead of leave (e.g. taking a core chem class to get it out of the way in lieu of leave), but i'm not sure that you can do other programs.

it depends on what program you want to do, and which year you are. for example, freshmen cannot give up leave to take both jump and soar. but an upperclassmen could (and some did) give up leave to teach basic for 3 weeks after working basic miltiary training through AETC for 6 weeks.

I gave up leave last year to go to Israel for 18 days. Might be giving it up again this year to go to Africa. Most often, people give up leave to either go on an Academy sponsored trip to another country or to do summer school (summer Ac).

To add onto what muff said, something like 98% do get their requested leave period.
