I’m a high schooler in 10th grade right now. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for good and worthwhile (also something that would help college apps)summer programs or opportunities in the SF Bay Area that I could apply to for Summer 2020 (I’d be a rising junior). I am looking for something computer science, engineering, or robotics related.
Thanks!!
Most people interested in computer science, engineering or robotics tend to have stiff competition with university students. You would have to email labs that you are interested in, read some of their research papers, and possibly produce a resume. I had a friend who was unable to get any research at college level labs because they had no space.
A good number of internships are age restricted or grade restricted to rising seniors or sixteen. If you fall under neither, you’ll have to search elsewhere.
But COSMOS always offers opportunities for students, though it is highly competitive. Other well known institutions often offer programs as well, though most are closed at this point in time.
If you fail to gain a spot in a lab, another option is to get one in a company. You’ll need a resume first, but you can definitely do some cold emailing. If you email smaller companies, you have a pretty good chance that they may at the very least consider you. Often, these smaller companies will be more open to a young high school intern if you ask them about a position and express interest in what they are doing at the company.

afaik, almost all summer programs are getting cancelled because of corona. I just got an email about this virtual summer program, the Summer STEM Institute. I applied for the research project track because the mentors are insane. There’s an ISEF winner and multiple RSI participants. Seems cool because it’s virtual, and my original plans got cancelled for this summer.
