Hello! I applied to Harvard’s secondary school program and Stanford’s summer session for this summer(both around 7 weeks). However, I had a backup plan for that if I didn’t get in, I would attend SAT prep classes(I’m a rising Junior), study for AP Physics and volunteer. I just heard back that I did get into Harvard’s program. Do you know which one of either Harvard’s or Stanford’s program is more meaningful, or worth it? Would you recommend me taking SAT prep or going to these summer programs?
Thank you so much!!
I don’t know much about Harvard and Stanford summer programs. I suggest searching online for reviews by former attendees. As for these programs versus SAT prep, I would go for summer programs. Many students have attended SAT prep programs over the summer and came out feeling prepared and ready. However, I came out feeling like I wasted thousands of dollars and weeks of my time. Everything I was taught at the expensive SAT prep classes, I could have taught myself with a prep book from Barrons, Princeton’s Review, Kaplan, and more. I suggest keeping in mind you typical study habits when making a decision.
my 2 cents. Most programs at the selective colleges will allow anyone to get into if they apply, have decent grades/recommendations and PAY. Just know that the programs themselves are not selective and furthermore, have no advantage to getting into said college. That being said, there are benefits to attending the programs if you are really interested in a subject area to study. And, it gives you time to visit and be on a college campus. But beyond that, don’t expect a leg up in any way to get into the college because you attended their college program. As far as SAT prep, I highly recommend to start prepping this summer - either tutor, class or self prep - and get testing over in the Fall of your junior year. Both my kids did this and boy, so happy they did. Good luck in whatever you do this summer!
honestly I heard Harvard’s program is not that great because you can’t do research or anything at it. It’s just like dual enrollment and you can do that anywhere. That’s why I applied to other prestigious research summer programs rather than Harvards program… I would definitely stay away from SAT prep it’s not worth wasting a summer for. Which program at Stanford? SIMR?
It isn’t going to help your admissions. But if you are interested in the subject matter or it will help you focus your major interest, go to whichever is best for that.
It depends on what programs at Stanford and Harward? SIMR is a great summer program with hands-on research opportunity. I have seen many rising juniors attending summer research programs and prep for SAT simultaneously. Try few SAT/AP practice tests to see if you need help, and if you decide to take coaching, you can always check to see if there any SAT/AP boot camps near where you live, or perhaps some online SAT tutoring.
