Summer Programs That Look Good on College Applications

Quick question: If I’m still unsure what I want to major in / study, would it be better for me to find a summer job or internship near me?

anything non-science related summer programs good for a international student? im a freshman right now

I’m hearing that summer programs aren’t the best way to improve your app any more. Colleges are starting to prefer applicants who have real jobs or internships with responsibility. Is anyone else hearing that?

Is summer science programs really competitive??

I got 48/68/41 in my PSAT in CR/M/W. I am also taking the SAT on Jan 26, can I send my scores after the application deadline??

They suggest that you not apply to SSP if your PSAT total is less than 220. It is EXTREMELY competitive.

If you want to go to an IVY LEAGUE university go to THEIR camp!!!

Except UPENN… West Philly is D-a-n-g-e-r-o-u-s! The low lifes walk all around the campus and are the same people they hire for security (and their lousy food service staff)!!

it isnt too late to begin applying for these programs is it?
im considering doing summer@brown… a two or three week course related to biology or medicine probably… because thats where my interests are and im planning on majoring in something related to that
only a freshman though so my options are limited… are there other opportunities for freshmen with biology related courses? anyone have experiences with these or brown? i did take my SAT I in 8th grade so i know some programs require that…

i know its quite expensive so if i dont do this ive been looking at volunteer opportunities but so far hospitals have 18 mo waiting lists… could look into libraries i suppose

Does anyone know how highly regarded getting a science paper published is? As a result of a summer lab internship

There are various levels of regard based on the publication which publishes it.

However, research work that has reached publication level is considered a good thing for college apps.

I’ve just heard of a brand new summer music camp in Nashville called Littlestone Academy, has anyone heard of it? It seems like an incredible summer program – teachers from Manhattan School of Music, NYU, Vanderbilt.

LiSMA[/url”>http://www.littlestoneacademy.com/music]LiSMA – if anyone has any more info about them let me know

Can anybody offer some insight in the “prestige” of these summer programs? COSMOS, CMU SAMS, Stanford EPGY, BU RISE, Cornell CATALYST Academy, and SES (Santa Clara). A general ranking would be good if anybody is familiar with any of these programs.

Bump to ^^^^!

For alumni of the Yale Global Scholars Program, what was the focus of your answer/topics you discussed (i.e. was the essay very personal or more generic)? I’m not sure how to approach this essay so any help would be MUCH appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Did anybody try any of the following ? If yes, any feedback is more than welcome. thanks
(1) NSLC (national studnt leadership conference)
(2) Columbia summer program ( creative writing)
(3) Iowa Univ. summer creative writing
(4) U Penn leadership for business
any other good summer programs for finance/business/politics/writing?

Our daughter did NSLC at Northwestern as a HS Freshman last summer and loved it. She made some real advances in leadership abilities as seen by her activities in school this year, such as starting a new academic club and getting lots of members for it.

Hey everyone! I’m a junior in high school interested in applying to some prestigious journalism summer institutes, does anyone know of some besides JCamp and the Northwestern Medill Cherub Program? Thanks in advance :)

Does anyone know if you have to deposit the $300 for SSTP florida if you get in within 10 days? I plan on attending but I want to wait till the results from all my summer camps come in before I pay a deposit…

can somebody compare Clark/NIH/SSP/Simons/Garcia/SIMR/JAX? specifically, rank them in terms of prestige, quality of research, quality of the students/mentors, and the research awards/college admissions garnered by the students.

i would include RSI, but I think we all know where it stands in terms of high-end summer programs :)

@jokolomo

RSI is the emperor! I would also include SUMaC and the HSHSP . However, of those you all indicated, Summer Science Program is the only one with “hook” in college admissions process. Correct me if I’m wrong?

What about Ivy League summer schools? Which is the best?
