Summer Programs That Look Good on College Applications

CollegiateDreams – Thank you. We will look into it.

For film production (and maybe acting but I am not certain) there is a very good summer program at Chapman University (Dodge School of Film) that is administered by the Duke TIP program. I don’t have the link for it but my nephew went and loved it. He is now in the film school at Chapman and thought it helped him in admissions.

Another well regarded (but expensive program) is at Tish in NYU. I have known current film students who have attended it and loved it. Since part of an application to film school requires a portfolio both programs can help a student have examples for their portfolio.

Jackson Laboratory Summer Student Program (JAX SSP) pays thousands, has free housing, gives you very, very strong research experience, is prestigious, gives you incredible connections, and will change your life. Trust me.

tawarren95, thanks for the inforamtion. How selected is this program? It looks like a really good opportunity. So many great summer research programs are next to impossible to get in (more selective than Ivys.) I would like to know if Jackson falls into that category.

4beardolls, no problem. The program is highly selective, and I think this is attributed to the growing number of applicants, as well as the diversity the program seeks (although the racial diversity is similar to diversity at lets say, Harvard). The people who attended last year were academically strong, but academically diverse.
I started a thread for anyone seeking some info on JAX here:

I would recommend governor’s school, at least for north Carolina and New Jersey, because it originated in NC and because the NJ one is highly spoken of. As someone who is waiting to see if they got in, I can’t wait! It’s supposedly a great experience, highly difficult to get into (in NC, less than 0.1% of applicants are accepted), and includes classes on philosophy and specialty classes for various subjects, including mathematics, physical/social sciences, visual art, foreign languages, dance, and performance groups. It also looks incredibly good for colleges, incredibly incredibly incredibly incredibly incredibly good.

I’m an international student in a private high school in the U.S. Is there any recommended summer college/ internship for me?

Thanks~ :]

Would it be okay if I contacted professors who don’t work at a college/university I want to go to, but they just work near me for internships and volunteering opportunities?

Research Science Institute Internationals?
Hello Everyone,

I don’t know if this is apt to put this thread on MIT forum, but I am going to ask about International RSI Scholars. I know that A LOT of domestic RSI participants are offered admission to MIT. However, recently I read a thread on CC and it was saying a lot of International Scholars were denied admission, unlike domestic participants. Is that true? If so, what is the reason? Both the domestic and the international participant should be extremely qualified to make it to the RSI… Is it because that they performed poorly as they weren’t proficient enough in English?

Has anyone here heard of National Geographic Student Expeditions? Their summer programs look amazing and I was wondering if they are really as good as they seem.

I don’t know if this was already mentioned because to be honest I don’t have time to read through 55+ pages, but I went to Cornell’s Summer College this past year and I highly recommend it.

Are there any other programs that aren’t math- or science- related and are still rather prodigious?

Which of these are math and science related?

I was just wondering, does anyone know how prestigious NSLI-Y is?

My son went to NSLI-Y last summer. I would say that the scholarship and the program is prestigous but not ultra prestigous. The program is selective as about 25% of appplicants were awarded the scholarship. Since this is an international program, it implies that the chosen students are mature, indepedent and flexiable.

@ Portkey,
Other programs for film production and/or animation besides Chapman U, Tisch, CSSSA are USC summer program (very expensive) or US performing arts, which offers their classes at UCLA TFT using their professors. Someone also mentioned a place, I believe in Georgia in the past. Go to cc discussion home and scroll down to college majors and go to film production. There are lots of helpful people in that forum, whose kids are in film production or animation.

What are some prestigious programs for rising juniors? I’m interested in physics research…

You can apply to SSP[/url”>Summer Science Program – "The educational experience of a lifetime"…since 1959]SSP as a sophomore.

Yeah…but they tell us to brace for rejection…

I guess what I’m asking is : for a student who wants to do physics research at an ivy in the future , what’s the best way to spend my 10th grade summer?
