Summer programs with late application deadlines (May?)

It’s May 1 and I’ve been waitlisted to all 3 summer programs that I applied for. I’m a rising junior, so this summer is one of the most important summers of my high school career. As of right now, I have nothing planned for summer.

I’m interested in computer science and visual design, but at this point I don’t think any good summer program applications are still open. I don’t have enough experience to work an internship, but I’d love tips if you have them on how to get an internship at a startup?

What other summer programs / opportunities are available this late in the year?

Carleton college may have openings in their summer programs. Applications are open for a couple more weeks.

Colleges like to see community involvement and taking the initiative.

If you enjoy computers you could volunteer at a summer elementary day camp teaching girls or other kids to code.

Likewise my grandma aged mom and her friends are always looking for advice. A senior center could set you up as an ‘ask a nerd’ help desk. Their questions range from why isn’t my spreadsheet importing the information from a document to how do I log onto Facebook.

See if there is a way you can reach out to nonprofits in your local area. Perhaps the local historical society could use your skills. Volunteering is just as good as something labeled an internship.

For a different kind of program SEA dot edu has a three week program on Cape Cod learning about oceanography and maritime studies. I highly recommend it.

Good luck. Your summer is what you make of it, not what is put down in front of you. A little brainstorming and you will come up with a good plan.
