Summer programs?

Hi I am a junior and was wondering what I should do this summer? I will be volunteering at the hospital and I am applying to the governor's school, but if I do not get into that what else can I do to enrich myself medically and have it look good on my college applications next year? Like any other programs I can apply to or any other medical/science programs for over the summer? Please help me out here! Thanks for your help in advance

anyone? I know you seniors are busy with apps but please?

seriously? 60 views and no replies?

Well, the best thing to do that would probably get you into any college or accelerated program would be if you attended the Research Science Institute. However, the deadline for that application has passed. On the other hand, there are many medical summer programs (I think there is one at Rutgers) or maybe you could apply for an internship at the CDC or NIH. If that does not work out, why don't you apply for a summer program at a reknowned university...Columbia has a summer program for genetics and Upenn also has something similar. But the deadlines for those summer programs have probably already passed.

I would suggest u definitely sign up for NIH because there is a good chance you will get in. Unfortunately I procrastinated and missed the deadline so what I ended up doing was I contacted a pathologist at my local hospital to set up a project. And it turned out that he is an alumni and a chairperson at Drexel Med school where I am applying for their bs/md program (he's writing me a letter of rec).

It is not always necessary to do a program. My advice would be that if you can not make any of the forementioned programs (not to sound degrading, of course) try to do some science research at a laboratory or facility. Many accelerated programs look for students who have been well-rounded in both the medical field as well as current issues in biology. This can lead to many other great things such as an Intel STS or a Siemen's Westinghouse project. Just keep it in mind.

Hey thanks a lot guys

I am applying to NIH, RSI, and a program at Drexel and possibly one at another university where I eventually want to go.

However, if I don't get into any of these, you're saying that I should just try to research somewhere locally or keep volunteering at the hospital or what else could I do?
