UPENN summer

Has anyone been to UPENN biomedical summer research program?
Is this program worth the money for a junior in highschool?

Columbia University has some nice summer high school programs too...i think they have a biomedical course as well as a genetics course. It's only 3 weeks too, so you have less summer vacation cut off. But it is pretty expensive. I still liked it though because everyone gets recommendations from Columbia professors...which is a pretty good thing to add to your college application. However, the UPENN program might be better because I think it is harder to get into and more competitive. However, it's always good to have a second choice. By the way, have you heard about the Research Science Institute in Massachusetts? RSI is the number 1 summer program to get into...it is rumored that if you're accepted into it, you are almost guaranteed admission into MIT.

i was admitted to northwestern pre-college program as well as UPENN biomedical summer program. which is more selective? which will look better on my app next year (i'm a junior) for 6-7 year med progam?

wow you turned upenn thing so early. Im going to start doing it now. lol

O yes, after investigation i think the UPENN one looks better as it is more related to med program. Those pre-college program just give you college credit. IF you want college credit stuff, then go to Northwestern.

O yah, Soonervous, can i see your stats

i went to the UPENN bimed reasearch program last summer of 2005...it was a great program but make sure you know what its about. I accepted to going there thinking it was gonna be hands on research in a lab, which it was not. What you do basically is have lectures in the morning and labs in teh evening and starting the 2nd week of the program you choose a research topic out of a list of like 10 and you are put into a group. Then the group splits up the topic into a section that each person researches through medical journals. After reading about 20 journals and gathering information, each student writes a research report on their section and then the whole thing is combined for the group. At the end of the program, the proffesors at UPENN read the reports and rank them on their quality and accurateness, my gorup getting #1. All in all it was a good program, maybe not for teh money but in the end i had alot of fun, met new people, and learned alot about the medical field. plus they write great recomendation letters for you!

I went to the UPenn biomedical research program last summer too. I loved the lectures by the professors doing research. Unfortunately, the lab part is just pretty much basic lab skills (the brochure makes it sound like people actually get to do research). It was a lot of fun though, and I enjoyed meeting people with the same interests. Overall, the experience was great.
