Summer Programs???

Hi everyone!

So I got accepted to the Stony Brook Biotechnology Summer Camp a couple of days ago and I was wondering if anyone has heard of it? Is it selective (I know that only 24 kids get in, but how many actually apply)?? Does it look good to colleges?

I'm also an alternate for the HSHSP program at Michigan State. Does anyone know how many people are waitlisted and how many of the alternates end up going??

Thanks!

Congrats on getting into the Biotech program! I have attended that program two years ago during the summer between 9th-10th grade, and it was a valuable experience. I’m not sure how many people apply every year, but my peers who were in the program that year were all very smart, and ranged from rising sophomores to rising seniors, most of which later attended ivy league colleges when they graduated (including one guy who is at Harvard right now).

You really should be making the decision on which summer program to attend based on what you are looking forward to learning over the summer, not purely on whether it will look good on colleges, since both of those programs are good for colleges. Are you hoping for an introduction or a start in science research, or are you looking for an intensive research program?

Were you from out of state? I live in Michigan and I know that the program doesn’t offer dorms over the weekends so I was wondering what the out of state kids that also attended the program with you did?

I was in-state, so I was able to travel back and forth from my house every weekend. :/

There were some people who were from out-of-state, but the farthest distance anyone lived in my group was Washington, D.C. One girl commuted several hours by car every weekend just to attend the program. I’m not sure how much of a help this is to you, however, since Michigan is farther away from Stony Brook University than Washington, D.C. :(

@youdontknowme: when did you submit your app to HSHSP and when did they send back a confirmation email?

I submitted it about a day or two before the deadline (April 1st I think??).
They never sent me a confirmation email, but I did email them to confirm that they had received my stuff =)

Congrats on the acceptance. Do you know anyone who was on the waitlist and got accepted perphaps? Sorry for posting this 2 years later.
