Looking forward to seeing all those taking GE third period out in the valley. ;)

ahh i cant wait..

so we got an email tonight saying they're starting a UAS (unmanned aerial systesm) program this summer and want 2012ers to be cadre for it. they have 20 spots and would learn all about our good friends, UAVs, and even fly some here at USAFA. sounds interesting actually

If I get what I want, I should be taking GE third period, and CST first, with all of second to recover and eat tons of stuff that's bad for you.

as it stands now, i have jump/ge 1st, cst 2nd and leave 3rd (and i'm hopefully going to peru!!!)

hey everyone i noticed that alot of you have signed up for jump. i was just wondering when can you take it?? is it between 4th and 3rd dig years??? or 3rd and 2nd??? because as of right now, besides striving to be the best air force officer/ pilot, my ultimate goal that year is make the wings of blue team??? any help or info is appreciated =]

in order to be on WoG/WoB, you must take jump summer after freshmen year. after that summer (beginning of sophomore year) there are tryouts, where the team takes on 25 new members. that's the only way to make the team

if you don't jump after freshman year, you can still sign up to take jmup as a senior during the school year

It's taken the summer between your 4* and 3* years, yes. You can also take it during the school year as a firstie, but if you want to try out for the team, that's obviously not going to work. PM me with any questions you have.

Edit: .....and Eagle beat me to it. :)

heck yeah i did... haha. but you're the expert on it. nice patches you guys are wearing now ;)

So what do you have to do in tryouts?

And a somewhat unrelated question...
How many summer programs are there? I know about Jump/Soar, but can you get anything else besides those?

And what is this UAV thing you speak of? It is starting this year?

jump/soar/space/basic prep and i think they're starting up cyber this year (but maybe it's next year?).
i guess in space you learn about...space! lol
and cyber is learning about cyber warfare, and i'd imagine it'd be hands-on, although it's new.

and basic prep is manual labor. :)

Are your assignments based upon your success in 4 year?

yep. do well your first semester, ie over a 3.2, and you're almost guaranteed what you want. ALMOST. you still have to do decent during spring semester too. they've got a whole long complicated thing to determine who gets what... but if you do well, no worries

Tryouts for WoG basically consists of some PT and an interview. They'll also look at how you did in AM-490, but the interview is by far the most important part of the application. Essentially, we don't care too much about the PT because anyone can get stronger. We also don't really care how well you did in 490 since we can make anyone a better skydiver. I mean, come on, that's our specialty. The reason that the interview is so important is because you can't teach personality. We want to see what you're like and how well you'd mesh with the team. WoG/WoB has its own very unique dynamic.

If you want me to go more in depth, I'd be glad to, but that's really what it all boils down to.

How many apply each year? Do you start off as WoG then try out for WoB?

Anywhere between 150-250 usually show up in the morning for tryouts. We had somewhere around 200 this year, which is about average. You lose some as the day goes on, and there were 109 of us, I think, that earned interviews. The team and staff come together to pick 25. There's no tryout for WoB. Everyone that makes it through WoG year (usually 23-24) makes the team. Making the initial cut is the hard part, I guess.

Sorry I'm going way off topic, but how come people dropped that day? And how do they determine who gets interviews?

my cadet wanted jump, then soaring and last space. Of course they got space. They really wanted to be able to jump. Is there anything they can do to get it changed or would it only hurt them more? I guess as a Parent, I want to see them be able to get some experiences at the Academy that they desire but I've already seen 2 things they really wanted only to be turned down. I guess the Academy can be a great experience if you get to experience some of the things you want to do. Can you sign up again for jump as a 3 Degree or is that pretty much it if you don't get the opportunity your first year?

packermatt, from what i hear, there aren't really any rules about how often they can train down at the airfield.
what petko brushes off simply as pt is highly intense. they want to make sure you want to be there. those who don't really want to be there drop out.

i'm sure he'll respond, but i assume anyone who makes it 'til interviews earns one.

afhokie, the schedules are tentative-there is a chance they can change. your cadet can route that through his/her chain of command.

it is possible to take soaring during the 3 deg school year, and jump firstie year if he doesn't get it this summer. bottom line, it's the military and we won't always get what we want. i've learned to put on a happy face and embrace what i've been given, and 9 times out of 10, i get something good out of it. (i know that's a hard pill to swallow, but it works.)

best of luck to your cadet!

it doesn't hurt to ask, but at this point it is HIGHLY unlikely they will make a change simply because someone wants something. many people want a few slots, and it's part of life. as missmuff said, they can still sign up and take jump as a firstie during senior year.
