Summer research-- options for humanities and/or science?

Hi everyone. I'm looking for something to do over the summer and decided that I would really like to work/study under a professor. I have two questions:
1) How would I go about approaching a professor about doing scientific research in their lab? I'm worried that they will misinterpret my request and have me do menial jobs. Many kids my age (freshman) have begun research and I have no idea how to get into the game. Anyone have any personal experience? Ideally I am looking for an opportunity to maybe write up a small paper, although I know that only a few very exceptional students wind up doing this.

2) I am also interested in literature and would not mind spending the summer under an English professor, but I really have no idea what I would do there. In the sciences one do research, but what would I do in humanities? Has anyone spent time with an English professor?

Thank you very much for any advice that you can give me. I'm starting to get concerned about making summer plans and really have no idea how I should go about setting things up.

bumpp this is a good question, i want to know too :)

I would suggest applying to a good summer program. A good science program will give you an opprotunity to do research and there are also some excellent humanities programs that are taught by professors or people with equivalent resources.

TI_2006, besides for TASP what summer programs would you recommend for humanities?
