I'm applying to the amgen program at Berkeley but it asks me if I'm applying to any others. I'm also applying to the one at UCLA. However, I would go to the one at Berkeley over UCLA because I want to work with a particular faculty member there.

Does anyone know if it hurts an application substantially if we say we are applying to multiple programs? I'm not going to lie on an application, so the one thing I would do is just not apply to UCLA if it is the case.

it's fine to apply to multiple places as long as it doesn't make your interests look scattered (profs know each other and if your area of research proposed at one school has NO faculty at the other then it'll make you look bad)

Are professors really that critical when it comes to summer research programs? Maybe it's just me, but I always thought summer internships, programs and jobs are there for the experience... whether or not they are in slightly different areas.

I have no experience with the Amgen program, but if it's organized through Amgen, I would have thought you could apply to them simultaneously. If you need an answer, you can always call the local office at each school and ask.

Incidentally, I just looked at the amgen scholars website and I happen to know the program director at UCLA. She also heads the undergraduate research center CARE funding. Huh.
