So I'm leaving in a couple of days for the Nike Running Camp at Stanford (lasts about a week). While I'm not too competitive nationally, I'm the best on my school's team and ranked ok statewide. Stanford is my #1 choice for schools, and I am hoping that my skills at running will be a good hook to complement an otherwise solid app (2350 SAT, 4.0 GPA, etc.), even if I'm not recruiting material. Will this camp be a good opportunity to get the attention of coaches at Stanford that might be able to help me in my admissions? Could it help at all on my app?

yes? it certainly couldn't hurt.

bump- anyone who's been before know wut its like? do u get to meet and talk to stanford coaches?

hmmm... never been to running camp, but try and develop contacts with profs or grad students, etc there. Then, when you come back home, you can chat with em, and learn more about stanford.

Just my 2 cents.

I never did that before. I suggest you go to the camp and try out. Just becareful, that's all.

it could help. i am going to Winged Foot XC camp in upstate NY in about a week. right now ive been running at Big Apple Games .

usually the coach's at the host school and sometimes from other schools are there training you. You basically just have to try your best and show you're a hard worker.

i have a friend that is in the same situation as you..try contacting ur schools early and meeting with the coaches

if the coaches give you a scholarship then you are probably in

This makes me pretty hopeful- thanks all. So do you think that even if I'm not that good at the state/national level or recruiting material per se that going to this camp might give me an edge over runners that didn't go but might be faster?

S went to STanford camp several years ago. It's a good camp, but a lot of the runners will be younger.
It will be a good opportunity for you to speak with the coaches and ask their honest opinion about your chances. Stanford, of course, recruits the strongest runners in the country, and those are the kids who get help with admissions. The coach might be willing to send a "we'd like to have this applicant" note to admissions for you. My understanding is that Stanford allows anyone who is willing to work hard to walk-on, unlike some of the other top programs. You won't see much competition-time, though. You sound like you have a lot of talent. Are you also looking at some schools where you WOULD be recruited and could have a good college running career? If you want to PM me with your times, etc. I can give you some suggestions.

No, it will not. Sweetpapayababe, judging by your academic stats you have posted in other threads, you are an excellent candidate for stanford admission. However, your running will not be a big factor. It will be the same as joining a club for senior year. The camp will not do too much either, becuase I'm assuming you are paying for it. For running to help a girl in Stanford admissions, she would most likely need to run below 18:00 for 5k.
