Hi :). I'm going to be a freshman this fall and I'm planning on taking courses this summer to transfer credits. Registration is closing really soon...

Here are my choices:

UChicago (expensive...)
Northwestern (also expensive...)
IIT
Loyola
DePaul
UIC
Wheaton
Shimer
Elmhurst
St. Francis

Opinions? Advice?

What’s your major? What classes do you plan to take? Why are you taking summer classes? Is money an issue? Where are you doing your undergrad?

Major: Something humanities related… perhaps. Hm. Unsure.
Classes: Probably gen-eds and maybe just one I’m interested in.
Why: I like attacking credits. And I may have to transfer.
Undergrad: Sorta undecided, but I’m using transfer.org to make sure.

Are you going to be in college this fall, or in high school?

If you are going to be in college, you need to ask the college you are planning to attend about this. It might not matter at all where you take your gen eds, but what you take might matter a whole lot. Be sure the specific course is pre-approved.

Take the classes wherever is cheapest and most convenient.

Hi, happymom. Thanks for the advice :). I’m wondering, is cheapest the best academically? I’m slightly worried about the quality of education though I know that most of the learning is up to me as it is a truncated time period.

I will be attending college this fall, and I will meet with my academic advisor and also use transfer.org to check transferable classes.

Edit to first post: St. Francis eliminated, too far.

New Choices:

UChicago (expensive…)
Northwestern (also expensive…)
IIT
Loyola
DePaul
UIC
Wheaton
Shimer
Elmhurst

If I wish to transfer sophomore year or maybe even earlier, will accumulating many credits and credits from the summer hurt my chances?

Really, if you are just trying to kill off a bunch of gen eds, and you aren’t trying to transfer something that would be likely to be a pre-req for anything, you can take the cheapest class that is approved by your college. Which would probably be at a Chicago-area community college rather than at one of the places on your list. If you want to take care of a pre-req, then you do need to get pre-approval from your college. Their specific transfer policies may not be covered by the lists at transfer.org.

Alternately, check your college’s website and see what kind of credit they give for CLEP tests. You could entertain yourself pretty well just studying for a couple of those and then taking them this summer. At about $75 each for the test and something else for the test site (shop around for the cheapest), they are an inexpensive way to knock out a bunch of gen eds.

Summer credits aren’t going to hurt your transfer chances provided you have good grades in those courses.

Updated choices: Chicago and NW not worth it, Wheaton complicated commute.

IIT
Loyola
DePaul
UIC
Shimer
Elmhurst

I reaaaaaally like Shimer. But I can’t find a detailed summer outline. I found blog posts on summer classes, one as recent as 5/8/2012, but nothing else.

@happymom

In addition to filling gen ed reqs I want to use these courses to take more advanced courses during the year, so I’m looking to establish a solid foundation.

I did look into a few community colleges, but I wasn’t interested in the courses they offered. And CLEP tests aren’t accepted at my home college, so summer credits, placement tests, and APs are my best bet.
