Summer School

Okay, so my public high school district has a summer program where high school students can take high school level classes in the summer for credit, in order to get ahead in the fall. the best part is it that the program is absolutely free. I was wondering whether I should try to find a pre-college program at a university (that doesn't charge an arm and a leg) instead of just taking summer courses and getting a job back home (as well as volunteering a little). Does anyone know if high school level "getting ahead" is weighted less than getting ahead at the college level? Right now I am leaning towards staying home, but i would appreciate the input. :-)
