What are people's views on taking courses over the summer to get ahead/knock out certain general ED requirements? Would it be better if I could get an internship lined up instead of trying to take courses at for example, a local community college, or possibly even doing UCLA's summer school? My goal is to get the most out of my 'free' summer before college. Feel free to comment. Thanks and I appreciate your input.

Are you in high school or college? I could argue either which way, but I think it would be more beneficial to get involved in internships/research or college summer programs instead of taking classes at the community college. I personally took summer classes at the community college every summer since 6th grade (I am now going to be a freshman in college). The classes used to be free for high school students, but I think now they are charging everyone equally per unit. So while it would be advantageous to get some GET classes out of the way, I think you would be able to achieve the same effect by taking AP classes during high school. In my opinion, I think that doing some sort of summer activity that relates to your college major or any passion in general would help build up a more well-rounded application that shows you can apply yourself both inside and beyond the classroom.

My advice will tend toward some meaningful experience like a job related to your intended career, internship or research experience. Taking classes is perfectly fine as an alternative. What is your long-term goal?

Taking summer courses are usually a great option for free time.
