I'm looking for a summer science program that I could do this upcoming summer. I had my hopes set on NIH, but probably not now that I learned that they do not offer housing (I live in Hawaii, only one relative living in Los Angeles).

I'd like to do research. Something like taking a college course over the summer would be my second option. I'm rather strong in chemistry.

That being said, anyone know of any good programs I could apply to? Perhaps not RSI, because I don't think I could get a 220 on my PSAT just yet.

Edit: Also, something that would take up a chunk of summer. Not that National Leadership Youth Forum or whatever, which is only like a week. Maybe I could do that as a side of some longer summer program.

uc santa barabara research mentorship program

it's six weeks of research with a professor or grad student..you can probably request a project and they'll do their best to get a mentor in that area

You know, the place with the Human Genome stuff. Being in Washington, DC., the headquarters are literally less than 5 miles away. Great stuff, for sure. As an intern, the only job you can get really is doing labs. Over and over and over and over again. Just ... time-consuming stuff. But it's rather worthwhile, from what I hear.

Why the real Summer Science Program itself? (www.ssp.org) I went to it this summer and it was awesome. I knew nothing about astronomy before but I loved it! You learn so much about physics and math and since there is only 36 people per campus, the community was very tight. It's 6 weeks long and I know that if you can't pay for it (it's like $3300), they will give you financial aid (a couple of ppl there got full rides). And supposedly in terms of prestige it is second to RSI for science.

Well, firstly, not everyone qualifies for MITES. And from browsing the site, it seems that what MITES is an opportunity to take some more advanced classes that you can find in most high schools. Not to do research. SSP, on the other hand, is focused on a research project (OD) that forces you to learn college level material at a pace well beyond high school. But then again, I don't know much about MITES to speak about it.

Yeah SSP!!! I'm a SSP 2005 alumni Socorro... if I'm not mistaken, so is Petter, there was someone from Singapore at Socorro... and I must agree about MITES... it's very minority oriented (minority I mean Hispanic and African American) SSP is definately a rigorious experience... I can't say SSP is better than MITES, but I don't think it would lose to it in terms of experience

High school is nothing compared to MITES. For anyone who is interested in SSP, you should also consider MITES. The people at MITES are rather diverse so saying it is "very" minority oriented is not true. Program structures might be different but one experience is no better than the other; it's just different. Some people at MITES also got to do research at the Broad Institute so if that's your thing, you can do that too. Both programs are equally amazing. If I had more summer time, I would've loved to do SSP (deferred as sophomore, guaranteed admittance as junior with full ride).

Yeah, everyone should go to SSP, it is the BEST...perhaps with the exception of RSI, of course. ;) And they have really nice financial aid so don't worry about the cost too much if it is an issue for you :)
