Summer Seminar - What is timing and method of acceptance communication?

Can anyone provide details on the timing and method of communication that USNA notifies candidates of their acceptance (or otherwise) for the summer seminar? USAFA and USMA were different and with their earlier timelines have already heard back from them so I'm curious how USNA handles it. Thanks for your assistance!

Unless they're doing something new this season, it'll be via letter with an acceptance form that must be notarized and returned with your check. Good luck ...

btw, these acceptances seem to have little discernible rhyme or reason as to "when" so hang in ... hang on.

Unlike those junior academies, USNA marches to its own drummer ... ;)

Looking through my daughter's Summer Seminar file, it appears that she was notified around the first week in March. There was a sports participation and medical power of attorney that required a witness signature, but none of the forms asked for a notary public.
USNA was very thorough and professional throughout the application process. I've heard otherwise about USAFA.

For the summer of 2005 (class of 2010) the process was the same as usna09mom indicates. The only difference was that there was an error in one of the instructions so an email was sent about two days before the package arrived. The email was to correct the instructions - not to inform that you had been accepted. It just happened the email arrive just before the acceptance package.

^^^receiving an email correcting information in the acceptance package BEFORE the package arrived must have been confusing/exciting! The information sent to prospective candidates for the class of 2009 was very detailed about what to bring, but failed to list BATHING SUIT! However, they followed original package up with a short note reminding candidates to bring swim wear. Someone must have gotten yelled at for that omission!

This is such an exciting time for SA candidates--Good Luck everyone and remember...GO NAVY!

i applied for NASS 2008 on feb 1st 2008. didn't get accepted till mid-april. i guess it depends on where u live.

where did u live sloanq?

i live in the far west so would i get it in april?

My first choice is to go to NASS but I accepted my application for the USAFA SS for now...but since due to possible financial reasons I might not be able to go to both so I might have to turn down USAFA..but I don't want to until I know for sure I got into NASS...the application deadline for USAFA is 3/31 and payment deadline is 4/30...what should i do?

We had the same problem, especially with USMA's SLS. The deadline for that is March 1 (received). We finally went ahead and accepted it, especially since he wanted the later (and I'm guessing more popular) session. And will work out the finances.

That said, I'm guessing that if you were accepted to USAFA's SS (which only accepts around 1000 students), then you really shouldn't have any trouble getting into Navy's (which accepts 2250), unless you live in the DC/Maryland/VA area (since they're trying to target areas that don't have as much representation - kind of a PR move).

If it gets close to the payment date for AF and you still haven't heard, I might try calling them and just explaining the situation to them and seeing if they could give you an idea. It's stressful that Navy has to have their application window so much later than the other academies. I think they lose some possible very-qualified applicants (at least at NASS) as a result!

Marciemi:

The financial problem is that my parents aren't supporting me on this even though I have told them nonstop that I wanted to apply to the academies as a freshmen. I'm paying this out of my own pocket and I'm working and saving as much as I can...but thank you marciemi for the info it was really helpful.

I heard that the BGO's can check application status' and inform you a bit earlier before the "offcial" letter? Also where is the financial aid/scholarship information? Because my family needs all the help we can get

Academy Hopeful- that seems true, sincemy BGO informed me of my LOA status a few days before the letter arrived. Im not sure if you are referring to the SS though

lil_3laiin3laiin, i live in Western MT. so i guess u can consider that the west. im not sure when specifically they send out notices to each region, but u will be notified before the end of april. if u really want to go USNA SS, i would wait and see.

How long after the USNA SS app closes (3/31), will the notifications of (accepted/not accepted) be sent out ?

Son was notified in late Feb last year after applying Feb 2. We were surprised at the speed. He attended Session 1. We live in west Texas. I do not believe they notify by region. I have the impression they are continually reviewing apps and if yours looks good, and if you may be from an "under-represented" area, minority group, etc, then they go ahead and send the acceptance. If you want the least popular session (don't know which that one is) and your app looks good, you may find out sooner. It is a little bit smoke and mirrors, mysterious to us on the outside! However, it is good training for filling out the app to the academy and waiting, wondering, and figuring what to do next!

I know I saw this somewhere but now can't seem to locate it - where can i find how "represented" my state is ? How can you figure out if your "state" is underrepresented ? Thanks

I have a quick question. Does how early you applied to the summer seminar affect your chance of acceptance? I am assuming yes because some people have already heard back from them.

I don't know if you can find out about "under representation." Search this forum. Whistle Pig had something way back when on under represented areas or target areas for recruiting. I do not believe it is state by state.

A mid came to my son's school this year just prior to Thanksgiving to recruit. Even though we had already applied, son and I both attended. I visited with the young man afterward and he told me our part of the state was under represented. He had friends who volunteered to do some recruiting stops at local high schools when they were home for break and were told " THanks, but no thanks. We don't need to recruit there heavily."

Yes, applying early to NASS is helpful. Although the process is still open, they are beginning to issue acceptances............so being the early bird may indeed net you the worm!

Has anyone heard of anybody being accepted for this year's seminar yet? I hadn't read any on this or the service academy board. I'd assume being early has to help because there are more slots available then.
