For those who’ve gone before, which classes would you recommend and which classes should be avoided?

Yeah, and also how much of a choice do you really have in what classes you get? Do you get the majority of them or just a few? Does it make a difference if you get the registration packet in early?

I'd woud not recommend economics or history. Those are the only bad ones I can speak for, but I know there were a lot of duds. I would recommend anything to do with the aero lab because it was a lot of hands on stuff. You build gliders, tour the jet engine testing area (were there was a YF-23 motor btw), theres also a huge cutaway F-100 motor from the F-15. Airmanship was fun because we flew in large full cockpit and very realistic simulators for the T-6 and at the end had a dogfighting competition. English was also very cool believe it or not. The instructor for that was a really cool guy and we read some pretty moving stories and had some good discussion. Unfortunately, getting what you sign up for doesn't really happen. I got only a couple of however many you sign up for. I'd imagine that getting your stuff in early helps, but probably not so much...

I actually got most of mine that were dead last and I sent in my application thing the day it came in the mail. Honestly, I don't know how they figure it out, but I wouldn't put too much stress on choosing.

Definitely the BCT training thing or something like that. That class is sooo bomb. It's basically a tour of the Academy and cadets telling you BCT is going to be like. So it wasn't a reflection of AFA classes, but it was fun and a really good break in between PTs and 3-4 hour classes. And I'm pretty sure it's the only opportunity you have to go to the C-store or Cadet Chapel and possibly the visitor center as well.

There are several tours of the chapel throughout the week, and the last day you usually have a lot of spare time waiting around for your bus to the airport where youcan go to the c-store. They have a cool combo you can buy with an AFA drawstring bag with an AFA shirt for like 15 bucks.

For our year (2006) they completely randomized the schedules (I think that's what admissions said in their first briefing?) due to a computer malfunction type thing....so almost everyone got weird stuff. Yeah, history sounds like it was boring. Management was actually a lot of fun because we got to learn about Operations Research for a big chunk of the class. My favorites were the astronautics, physics, and engineering mechanics workshops. We built and launched model rockets, learned about the satellite program at the Academy, studied lasers and sound waves, and built Lego robots for a competition. I was pretty lucky--I enjoyed all of my classes, even the ones I loathed going to! The instructors really made an effort to engage their students and, even though the seminars are 3-4 hours long, you will have opportunities to move around, tour labs and do a lot of hands-on stuff.

Should we put the Airmanship seminar down as one of our choices if it says that all students will attend?

bumpbump..

Airmanship (flight sims are really fun!)
Political Science was good too. We did a simulation about oil pipelines in the Caspian and hunting down terrorists...it was chaos, but really fun chaos.

The Aero Engi course was a lot of fun. I wish I'd had the chance to take the Political Science seminar, that one sounded like fun, and from what I remember, most people really enjoyed it.

I did get most of the classes I signed up for, but who knows how they decide that stuff.

Does anyone know how many people apply to the summer seminar? And roughly how many are accepted? Thanks.

I believe 1800 applied, 350 went to each session (700 total) and about half will end up at USAFA in the class of 2011. So only a third of each incoming class are summer seminar attendees.

What's more important than attending summer seminar - your GPA, SAT or ACT scores, ECs (including sports), and a good impression during your AOL and nomination interviews. Doing well on the CFA and passing your physical is icing on the cake.

Have a parent or friend do practice interviews with you - know why you want to go, be able to discuss the honor code, and prepared to cite how you have been a leader or overcome adversity. Lastly have a good sense as to what you would like to do in the Air Force (be able to discuss several career tracks). Finally, dress appropriately - you'd be surprise how people present themselves.

Thanks. At the summer seminar are you tested on the CFA?

Yes, but it is not counted for admissions.

It's just a practice CFA but I think that if you did well and want that to be the one they count they will do it because my roommate wanted to use hers and our cadre said it would be fine but it's at elevation so you probably shouldn't use it.

Don't think there is any possible circumstance in which the CFA at the Summer Seminar could be counted for your application.
