Summer Semminar - Acting

We would like to learn more about this Seminar. Did you attend or know someone who attended this program? Please share the experience with us. What do you think are the best parts of the program? What parts of the program didn't meet your expectations? Do you recommend this program to students interested in pursuing a BA, BFA or minor in Theater? What other programs did you consider and why did you choose USC's Summer Acting program?

Here is the link to the description of the program

My daughter attended the Summer Acting Seminar last year (between her junior and senior summer.) I would have to say, it depends on what you are looking to get out of the program. For my daughter it was an enrichment program. She had an incredible experience meeting new people and spending a month away from home. Her professer was excellent and although my daughter had already had ample acting experience, she says she learned a lot. It is one of those things in life where you get out of it what you put in to it. We did not go into the program with any expectations so I can not answer to that, but I believe the best part of the program was the friendships and added level of independence (although she was already quite independent) she gained. She reveled in the chance to spend an entire month on campus at USC, which this past year was the ONLY university she applied to (thankfully she was accepted). I don't believe this program is a neccesity if pursuing a BA, BFA or minor in Theater, like I said, to us it was enrichment. I don't think attending would neccesarily further any career goals your son/daughter has in that area but it could possibly clarify them. We also considered the UCLA program and several Speech and Debate camps, she choose this program because she already knew that USC was the university she wanted to attend and knew the excellence of their teaching staff.

TalkItUp, thank you for sharing your view of the program. Your daughter must be an outstanding student to have the confidence that USC would accept her. Congratulations! Is she a Performing Arts major? How dos she like the school?

My D is looking for a pre-college theatre summer experience. She has spent the last 9 years volunteering and performing at a community theatre and at one of our local youth theatres. She is looking for a program that helps her prepare for the college auditions and I am wondering if this program would be appropriate for the training she wants/needs. Yes… she also wants all the other great things this program offers like the college experience, the new friends, living away from home, the college application workshop, the college credits and specially getting to know USC. She also applied to Carnegie Mellon Pre-College MT program, but USC is the school she would like to attend for her undergraduate degree, if she is accepted.

Thank-you, My daughter is a senior this year so she will be attending USC in the fall. she does have quite a bit of confidence but she also realized she was taking a risk (she has a Gap-year plan in place) but she knew USC was the only school she wanted to attend. D has been accepted into Annenburg as a Broadcast Journalism major. I do know several of the friends she made over the summer were applying (and at least 2 were accepted) into the Performing Arts major. It sounds like it would be a good fit for your daughter!

Acting Summer Seminar input will be appreciated.
