My daughter attended the Strawhats last weekend and was pleased to get 9 callbacks. But I’m not sure that anything will come of them as I’ve heard that interested theaters are quick to send out offers, and she hasn’t heard anything. In the meantime, she received word that she was not accepted to NETC. It’s too late for this year, but next year…when you submit your headshot/resume…what are the folks at NETC looking for? Is there something you can include on your resume that will give you a better shot at getting an appointment?

^^^I don’t think you can analyze it that way. Your D did well at Strawhats but got no invite to NETC. Go figure. I recall when my D was a freshman in college, her long time friend, who was also her college roomie, got into NETC but not Strawhats! From NETC, she was cast as a lead in summer stock. She is now a lead on Broadway.

My S is a freshman in a BFA acting program. The first I heard of NETC was when he told us that he had landed a slot for March 20 and asked us to drive him to the Boston area from our home about a 9 hour drive from Boston (he will be home for spring break then) and then drive him to his college. I haven’t seen anything about summer stock on the Theatre/Acting site of CC and so I looked on the MT site and see that there are some postings about summer stock. From some of the postings, I gather that NETC is a program in which theatres in the New England area (at least that is what I think the NE in NETC stands for) audition students for summer positions. Is there anything else I should know about this program before my husband and I brace ourselves for spending a lot of time in a car that weekend?

NETC Auditions are mostly New England professional companies, but also companies from other regions that gather together to audition college students and professional performers and interview technicians for work in summer and year round (for graduating seniors and professionals) work. The companies will range from companies that ask young people to pay them for more of an educational apprenticeship experience to companies that pay (most will pay in the $75 per week - $300 per week range [some more, some less] – most including room, some including board).

If your S is auditioning on Saturday or Sunday he should expect that he may be there well into the evening. If he is auditioning for MT the dance call is not until 6PM or 7PM, so even if he auditions in the morning he will need to stay for the dance call in the evening. If he is later in the day (or called back for theatres that only hold callbacks after the dance call), he should expect that he could be there as late as 9PM or 10PM. The Monday auditions and callbacks are often done by mid-day. If he is in the Acting Only room his day will not be as long because he will not need to wait for the dance call.

The good news for you is that there is a terrific shopping mall across the street from the hotel where the auditions take place with a California Pizza Kitchen that is quite good. The shops in the mall are also very good, so lots of places to kill time while you are waiting!

PS. Depending on where your son is in school – can he take a bus, train, or plane back to school? Are there others from his school who will be attending with whom he can hitch a ride with?

I have quite a few students traveling up from VA (a 10 hour drive from school). It is not at the end of our break (our break is the weekend before), and many students are carpooling with other students back and forth to the auditions.

We also have a number of students going to SETC in Atlanta this week… (9 hour drive from school… we are apparently almost equidistant from the two conferences this year :)) and many students are carpooling. Because your S is on spring break the week of NETC the carpool TO NETC may not be an option… but if others from his school are there at the conference, he may be able to hitch a ride back. :)

Thanks KatMT for the great information!

Yes, thank you KatMT for the information. I had planned on it being a much shorter day, glad I didn’t book our flight yet!

The acting only auditionees can be done earlier… generally no later than 6PM-ish.

for MT auditionees the day is often longer because of the dance call in the evening, and the fact that some theatres do not start callbacks until after the dance call is completed.

KatMT - do you know if many companies are still around on Monday? My daughter’s friend has a Monday slot and is concerned that many will have already left by then. She was actually told by one theatre company that she should see them on Sunday because they won’t be there on Monday.

Does anyone have any info/feedback on the Weathervane Theatre in NH? Thanks!

Stagemom, an actor friend of ours did a summer at the Weathervane about ten years ago. He’s a very successful Broadway actor, and is married to an even more successful wife! From what I recall, his experience at the Weathervane was a positive one. Back then they had a true repertory system with several shows running at the same time. I’m not sure if that’s still how they do it or not, but if it is, it’s great experience to get. That part of NH is pretty remote but that is often the case with some of these summer experiences and can be both positive and negative, depending on the kid and the group that’s there. Sorry I can’t be of more help, or have more recent info. Hopefully someone else here has something that will be a little more informative. :)

alwaysmom-Thanks!
Yes they still do true rep theater! I’ve heard good things about the place but the remoteness may be a problem for my D. She lives in Philly now so it would be quite a change! I’m sure they keep them busy though, what with learning/performing different shows every day.
I’m interested in knowing what the living conditions are. D did summer stock shows the last few years of high school and the living conditions were a bit sad. Just want to make sure she doesn’t get scared off! :)

Thanks again!

Does anyone have any information on the Millbrook Playhouse in Mill Hall, PA? thank you!!

KatMT - Thank you very much for your very helpful info on NETC. We also are driving to the Boston area from VA. My S said something about a 5 or 6 p.m. audition with callbacks around 8 or so. Having a mall nearby with stores, movie theatres, restaurants, etc. will make my husband happy. I noticed that the summer stock auditions mentioned on this thread don’t necessarily occur on a weekend or when a student is on spring break. My S’s program has a very strict attendance policy, as I am sure many other BFA acting/MT programs do. How do the kids manage to attend the various auditions if their program has a strict attendance policy?

There are still companies at NETC on Monday, but it seems that some have left by then.

Thanks - I’ll pass that on!

Has anyone heard/have experience with Connecticul Reperatory Theatre?

Sorry, I meant Connecticut Reperatory Theatre - I’ll blame my keyboard!

I am going to college in the Midwest, but I live in Houston, Tx. Does anyone have advice about getting involved with summer stock in the Houston area?

Has anyone been offered any internships/apprentices at any summer stock theatres yet?

My freshman D had a NETC Monday audition slot (it was the only day she was available due to tech commitments at college) and she got a few callbacks and just signed a contract as a Princess at a kids theme park in PA for the summer. Not a ton of theaters there on Monday, but just enough to get my kid a job for the summer. Good pay, long hours, hard work…she will have great stories to tell her children. I will let you know if this was a good idea or a bad idea!
