Does anybody have experience with programs such as Landmark Volunteer & how admiisions views those programs

My daughter did Landmark Volunteers two years ago (Jamestown/Yorktown). I don't know how admissions viewed this, but it did fit in nicely with her other interests. It was viewed quite positively by one of her scholarship organizations. There are a few other parents here who also have experience with LV. It's a good organization.

I've read that the "pay to volunteer programs" are not viewed very positively by admissions unless its related to an area of interest rather just purely a 1 shot volunteer experience to go on the application

My daughter was a Landmark Volunteer two summers ago and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. She loved her team leader, loved the project, and loved her fellow volunteers (and still keeps in touch with most of them). As a parent I thought the program was well run and well organized.

However when it came time for applications (daughter is now college freshman) she did not list her Landmark experience. She didn't think that a one shot, two week, pay-to-volunnter experience was worth mentioning. Instead under summer experience she mentioned a research grant she had won, other (free) volunteer work that she had done, and paid jobs she had held.

She loved her Landmark experience and often recommends it to other people, but she didn't see it as being particularly significant.

My own advise would be that if a student is truly interested in the program for its own sake, by all means do it, it is a wonderful experience, just don't do it with the expectation that it is a postive in college admissions.

i was thinking along those lines as well

My daughter did a stint at Landmark last summer and found it to be a very worthwhile experience. She was interested in the theme (environmentalism), and I do think the experience strengthened her application. As a side benefit, she liked the other kids in her group and learned a lot through working as a team. She worked very hard and got an excellent recommendation from the team leader.

My friend's son did Landmark three summers in a row. On one of his acceptance letter, the admissions officer made note of the "great volunteer work." I think that doing it for three summers in a row showed commitment. I would recommend the organization highly.
