Summer work auditions pay to audition?

@Sammy8028 It largely depends on the season. If the theatre is putting on a dance heavy season, then yes, dance weighs heavily. If it’s not a dance heavy season, then it weighs less heavily. (But I would say a certain level of proficiency is sought, no matter the season).

@sammy8028, to add on to what kategrizz said, I noticed this year that the theatres will state that on the audition page. They’ll say something like “looking for dancers who sing…”

@GSOMTMom - that was kind of my impression. Most schools seem to weight dance least important for acceptance of the various elements - where the summer programs seem to be rating it as most important. Just interesting

@sammy8028, I wouldn’t exactly say that. For summer stock it depends on the season, and there are MT programs that weigh dance heavily even if it’s not explicitly stated.

@GSOMTMom, Of course nothing is true for all schools or for all summer stock programs, and I get what you mean by it depending on the season. But the balance of probability seems to push dance down for SOME top programs, like Carnegie that doesn’t even evaluate it, and up for summer stock, as I noticed one of the A1 FAQs recommended dancing 1st, as it is most likely to get you hired.

A friend of mine with a very successful kid in the business said that in the course of a career dancers get work first, and actors get work the longest. No idea yet if it is true for my kiddo, time will tell

Anyone know where the A1’s will take place this year? The location is not on the website. My guess is by Pearl, but not sure.

2nd season for A1s. Son did them last year and said they were very well organized and professional. He got several great callbacks, including for a national tour. This year, he did an early live prescreen recently and was notified he got a slot, but the prescreen auditions are continuing as again, it is still very early for them.

Do students receive email notification if they are rejected at the prescreen? My DS auditioned and has not heard back, but most everyone else has - including being on a waitlist. I heard some received rejection emails but idk for sure. Wondering if he just won’t hear since time has passed and others did. Thanks!

I don’t know of any schools that don’t notify of prescreen rejections. May be worth an email to confirm they received everything they need.

@owensfolks, I believe @ohmtmom’s question was about the A1 prescreens being held on selected college campuses this fall, prior to the A1 auditions in NYC in January.

Ah, thank you. Oops.

yes, thank you! I am wondering if you hear back from A1, regardless of the outcome. Mine has not heard and everyone else in the program seems to have. Hasn’t asked people who got a “no” if they were told no or just assumed because others got yes and a waitlist… so, does anyone know if they send you a rejection email?

She should hear back either way. I believe you get your $ back if you are not invited to audition.

Last year, an email was received to basically say, you’re getting your money back by… An assumed rejection.

@ohmtmom – We just hosted A1s, and they said they were on a 24 - 48 hour notification timeline to notify Yes, No, or Waitlisted. They auditioned here last night and all of our students heard today of their statuses.

I think that if your child has not heard they should check their junk mail, and then (if nothing is there) contact A1 directly.

Anyone not offered an audition slot in NY will receive a refund of their fee.

Does anyone know anything about the A1 live pre-screens in November in NYC? D submitted her application back when they said the deadline was Sept 15 but hasn’t heard back yet. Now the website says the deadline is 48 hrs before the live date. Wondering if they are waiting to get back to those who submitted early now that they extended the deadline and also wondering when they might post the actual date.

My son was booked all last summer thru
Strawhat and had an amazing paid experience at Surflight Theater in New Jersey. He just made it they the prescrren for A1 and will probably submit again to Strawhat! Highly recommend the experience worth the money and great to continue to audition for actual paid summer theater! We make the actual Call trip to New York
A combined fun and work weekend!

@Theatergeekmom Last year I read about the re-opening of Surflight – it looks like an awesome place! What a fun location!

@waitingforlife I just checked the website and it says that the deadline for applications is 12/1. Is there a different place to look for information regarding the NYC pre-screens? I can’t find anything about that. Thanks!

Has anyone from on campus A1 auditions received a refund yet or has almost everyone been moved forward? I know someone who did not get a slot last year and had to wait a very long time for a refund. I’m just curious if things are more streamlined this year and more efficient?
