SUNY Buffalo VS. Purdue from a cost standpoint

S got accepted into Buffalo and Purdue for Engineering but B gave us $7500 scholarship for a net of $17,500 and Purdue gave nothing for a net of $37K. we are not expecting much aid just loans...we have enough to pay B straight up

From a ranking standpoint Purdue is certainly much higher ranked than Buffalo but is it really worth $80 k over 4 years. Buffalo was our first visit and we really liked it, problem is that has we visited another 8 schools we kind of lost favor with it. Now that we have to make a decision soon we are really unsure of what to do.
Pros/cons
We live in Pa, so 6 hours to NY state vs. 12 hours to In.
S loves to snowboard and B has plenty of that
Purdue has better coop and internship opportunities
Research at both schools are plentiful
Sports teams much better at Purdue

Any rational advice would be welcomed, hard to tell son that he can't go to his number one choice

I would ask this question in the engineering section of this site.
They will probably tell you to go to Purdue only if you want to pursue a carreer in teaching engineering. A Phd from Purdue carries more weight in the academic circles than one from UB.

On the other hand if he just want do be practicing engineer then UB is probably the best choice.
Once you get your first job it makes no difference where you got your degree from it’s all about experience.

He could certainly apply to Purdue PhD programs from UB.

How in the world does your buffalo tuition cost 17,500 a year?

I’m going to guess:

Out-of-state tuition: 12,870
Room/board: 10,092
Fees: 2043
Scholarship: -7500
Total = 17,505

user_007 -You must of aced the Math SAT

The OOS tuition at the SUNY schools is a bargain and actually cheaper then in state schools like Pitt and Penn State
