I'm just looking for general impressions of suny buffalo. I live in Iowa and i'm interested in engineering and or applied mathematics. I realize that we have Iowa State which is pretty reputable. I'm kind of looking to get out of Iowa however. I'm just looking for some info on suny buffalo before i decide if i should visit there.

UB has rigorous programs in engineering and mathematics. The school is definitely one on the upswing, but is not quite there in terms of being a flagship school like many of the midwest universities. Still too many commuters and not enough activities on campus. But facilities are excellent, merit aid is there, and off campus opportunities for housing, work are there too.

where does it compare to schools like Iowa State and Illinois inst. of technology?

The academics are underrated, but the social life and campus culture is a bit lacking due to the bone-head decision to locate North Campus on a swamp surrounded by highway. I know a fair amount of students who lived in the city and commute out to Amherst for classes, activities. Between the subway and the busses, it is not hard to do. Buffalo as a college town isn't D.C. or Boston, but it is generally underrated.

I would also look into RIT, Rochester, RPI, and Binghamton. But if you can get into any of the Midwestern land grants (especially the likes of MSU), I would recommend them.

DIscussion on SUNY Buffalo can be found, starting at post #14 in the middle of the current thread here in College Search:

Thread title PLEASE HELP! Looking for East Coast Schools w/ 10,000 Students
See middle of post 14 and read a few posts beyond that.

Neonzeus and Paying3tuitions wrote lots aobut UB on a thread I started on this forum. I hope this link works. If it does, read what Neonzeus wrote (and it also includes what Paying3tuitions wrote. My son is also considering UB for engineering.

Hope this works. It will provide you with lots of info.
