Any suggestions on which college/university has a strong program in French?

Any of the university centers should meet your needs (Bing, Stony Brook, Albany, Buffalo). My Italian teacher completed her undergrad in French at Bing, and I believe she enjoyed her experience.

If you’re into a smaller setting, New Paltz and Geneseo both offer French. New Paltz’s foreign language department is well-known, and Geneseo is generally well-regarded.

The full list of SUNYs offering French:
Albany, Stony Brook, Binghamton, UB, Geneseo,New Paltz, Brockport,
Buffalo State, Cortland, Fredonia, Oneonta,Oswego, Plattsburgh, Potsdam

You can’t throw a stone in Pburgh without heating a french speaking person. :)

I have no knowledge of the schools credentials, but I know it’s 30 minutes from the largest french speaking community outside of France!

If Plattsburgh doesn’t have the best French department among the SUNY colleges it should, just based on its proximity to Quebec and Montreal. I believe P’Burgh residents receive Montreal television and have ready access to Montreal’s French newspapers. As penzly says, Montreal is a quick drive from P’Burgh and most students I have known who have gone to school their made pretty frequent trips to Quebec (if for no other reason than that the legal drinking age is 18?/19?)

My son who is at New Paltz was interested in taking some French classes and looked up the professors on rate my professor dot com and they got amazing reviews. He is excited to take the classes if he can fit them into his schedule since he is not a French major.
