I'm a senior about to start the application process, I know I want to major in french. Any thoughts about the best place to do that? So far I'm definitely applying to USC, SMU, UNC, and St Andrews, but I'm open to suggestions. I know "Middlebury" immediately comes to mind, but I really can't handle the east coast. No offense to east coasters.

UNC is on the East Coast, and is filled with East Coasters.

Maybe McGill U (still somewhat east coast but French is the native language).

What is it about “the east coast” that you think you can’t handle? Dartmouth, Middlebury, and Georgetown all have outstanding language departments and their enivronments span quite a range. McGill is an English-speaking school in a very international-feeling city in a francophone province. (I think they also have some kind of special scholarship for French majors that you might want to look into.)

I mean regardless of where you go you are going to end up with a mix of people from all over the US. I mean if you think that USC (especially as a private school looking for both geographic and ethnic diversity) is only going to have only west coasters from SoCal then you’re crazy.

Wisconsin.

I would look into going to a college in the French-speaking part of Canada. Then every course would be in French and you would be totally immersed 24/7. Or, how about college in France, Belgium, or Switzerland? Since I’m Swiss I encourage you to do that! ;)

Bonne chance, n’importe ou tu iras.
