SUNY IT Strategic Plan

This document, developed a year ago, provides a good summary of SUNY IT now, compared with its peers:

<a href="http://www.sunyit.edu/home5/cmsfiles/provost/SUNYITStrategicPlan2020-DRAFT.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.sunyit.edu/home5/cmsfiles/provost/SUNYITStrategicPlan2020-DRAFT.pdf</a></p>

Pages 32 and 33 provide the date that is most telling, comparing it with other like institutions. Earlier on, the report says that the most comparable institutions are Wentworth, UMASS Dartmouth and UMASS Lowell. UMass/Dartmouth and Lowell seem to be different, in that they are larger and I believe they have more grad students teaching. Wentworth seems to be the closest comparable school.

Here's what I know/have seen about SUNY IT:

1) They are adding engineering majors in addition to their engineering technology majors. Civil and Electrical/Computer Engineering have been added, and Mechanical Engineering will start in Fall, 2013.

2) The buildings are mostly new. They have added a beautiful new dorm, student center and athletic center in the pat couple of years.

3) They are also adding a Center for Advanced Technology / Chip Development Center that is supposed to be used for both academics and industry (they're bringing in some nanotechnology companies). It will be completed in 2013.

4) The freshman class is small - about 200 students, and in many ways it is a commuter school. I think there are about 600 students living on campus.

5) The location is a bit separate from Utica - located on the edge of suburbia / boondocks 5 miles north of the city.

The school is fairly easy to get into, with the average SAT 1060 (CR + M).

I like seeing all of the facilities development and the new majors.

The chip fab on campus could bring some unique co-op opportunities.

I could see that the location and small size could be considered kind of boring for a college kid.

My son is considering this school at present (for engineering or engineering technology). I still haven't been able to connect with a student who goes there.

Can anyone provide any inside info on what this school is like?
