My s is considering transferring to SUNY New Paltz. He is at UMiami right now in his Sophmore year. He thinks UM is just OK. The hot weather and the superficial people are getting to him and he is thinking of going in the total opposite direction. Anyone going to New Paltz or have any suggestions, comments, etc?

Extreme cold weather is also terrible. However,if you really enjoy cold weather, that's alright.

Every college has a lot of superficial people, the situation won't change a lot after transfer.

Why not SUNY Buffalo?

He wanted a school that he could drive home easily from and New Paltz is about a 2 hour drive from where we live.

It sounds a good idea

bumping this....there is no forum for New Paltz, so looking for others who have info about this school.

I would actually stick it out at U Of Miami. It is better then New Paltz academically and is more well rounded. As for kids being superficial, I think you will find that at any college. How is the campus life there if you do not mond me asking?

The campus life at UM is really nice, the school is beautiful, the weather hot. Yes, academically it is considerably better than New Paltz, but I don't think my son is going to last more than this year there. He just can't see spending 4 years in one place, he misses the change of seasons and wants to be closer to home. He would like a more alternative environment. He hasn't really been able to find kids that are like him at UM. He's made some friends and is pledging a frat to try all he can to make it work there, but he's found that many of the kids are really competitive, arrogant and self centered. He'd rather switch to a less impressive school that fits him better than stay for the prestige of the degree. I have no complaint with UM. It is a really great school for the right kind of person.

I personally believe SUNY New Paltz is right for your kid.He can be closer to home, nothing is greater than that!

And your kid has social problem with her classmates. This is a very serious problem.Kids at his age really need friends and satisfactory social life.Happiness is the most important thing after all.

Yeah,I know SUNY is not that prestigous but clearly, the quality is not bad.
