Congratulations! I bet it feels good to be done. My DS22 is trying to decide between New Paltz and Bing. I remember that you were on the Bing site if you don’t mind sharing what were your impressions of New Paltz and (I know it is individual) but why she chose New Paltz over Bing.
Son committed to NP over Bing. Bing clearly has a leg up in reputation, but NP is closing some of that gap. It will always be an apples to oranges comparison to a degree though as one is a University and the other a college.
For my guy the better fit at NP was due to culture. Bing is very preprofessional. Kids all know they want to be doctors, lawyers, engineers. Its all clear in their head (at least they think). Driven- in a good and possibly bad way I guess. It is NOT the place to discover oneself. Bing kids are moving 60MPH in a direction.
NP kids are looking at college as an opportunity to find direction. Good, smart, quirky kids who are still trying to figure it out. I did not get any sense that they were academically inferior to Bing kids, just less sure of where they were headed.
This was a big decision in our house. She was admitted to both NP and Bing. Initially, when we started this process, she was Bing all the way. She felt the kids there would be more on her academic level. We went and toured Bing, NP and Cortland. There were SO many kids on the Bing tour. She thought the campus was beautiful but to be honest, the tour guides, kids walking around etc. were not friendly at all. She didn’t like having to take a bus into town and having to pay for the gym rubbed her the wrong way. She sat in on an Honors program class at NP and loved it. The professor referred to NP as the Goldilocks school…not too big, not too small, everything is just right. I love that she can walk to the cute little town and feel she is safe there. Its definitely the place for our daughter and we are all very happy and relieved her decision has been made. NP also gave her some scholarship $$. Bing did not. I wish you luck in your decision. They are both wonderful schools.
