hi everyone! i'm from NJ and got into suny new paltz, and i'm really into the school. however, not many people from where i live have even heard of it lol. i was wondering, what's the general reputation of the school? is it known for being a good school academically? and what else is it known for?

New Paltz has a decent reputation. It’s one of the better SUNY schools in my opinion. I’ve noticed that NP is most popular with people from downstate new york/Long Island. People come here for the surroundings and proximity to NYC as well as the academics. The town is very welcoming and laid back. It’s a nice place to attend college imo.

Besides academics, New Paltz is known as a party school. It’s not as bad as it was say 20 years ago, but it’s still pretty common. If you’re not into drinking/drugs you may have a harder time finding things to do. Personally, I’d like to see more campus activities. Regardless, everyone is generally friendly and polite!

I’m a history student at NP so feel free to ask me any questions!

SUNY New Paltz has really changed a lot in the last few years. The academic reputation and popularity of the school has grown in leaps and bounds. It is much harder to get in than it was a few years ago. I think the appeal of New Paltz is the great location compared to most of the other SUNY’s. The proximity to New York City makes it a very attractive option as well as the artsy and funky little town and the beautiful surrounding area.

It is well known as a school for education and art but has lots of other highly regarded majors as well. My son, as a student there, has been able to take lots of interesting courses in a variety of majors. It has the small LAC feeling without being too samll at 6,000 undergrads. We have found the staff to be very accomodating and the advising to be top notch as well. Small classes has let my son get to know his professors well.

The student population tends to be down to earth and accepting as many of the students are artsy and creative. I think the popularity of NP will continue to soar as many people realize what a gem it is.

Hi my son is down to considering New Paltz or Oswego. I know that Paltz has a better rep. but I really liked Oswego. A couple of questions about New Paltz. Drugs? Heard lots at New Paltz, any truth? overblown? My son is just a regular kid, likes sports, not an “artsy” " hippie" kind of kid. I hope I am not insulting anyone I don’t know the terms to use anymore. I am just wondering if he would not fit in or is the campus diverse. Again, just going by what I hear, we visited and found the school very nice and it does have a great reputation. He is from Long Island and will major in Marketing/Business. Just looking to hear from kids/parents that are like him, not a jock, not a hippie, middle of the road, it’s crunch time now trying to get as much info as we can. Thanks
bsbluet is online now

My son is a student at New Paltz and he is also a regular kid and likes sports. One of his housemates is a business major, the others are psych and journalism majors. The school is quite diverse and has all types of students. What they have in common is that they are down to earth and accepting of each other. He likes the small class sizes and has been really getting to know his professors, especially this semester. He has been hanging out with them after classes and getting lots of feedback on his work and one has offered to help him with getting into grad schools.
As for drugs, he has met some students who are into them…he is not, but doesn’t mind being friends with those that do as long as they respect him and his choice. He has also made friends who are not into drugs and none of his housemates do them.
If I can answer any other questions about New Paltz, please ask.

bsbulet - I’m a current student at New Paltz. I’m not going to lie, the party scene is still pretty lively around here. That said, I’ve never felt pressured into partying. There are other ways to meet people, it just takes a bit more work. As long as your son participates in campus activities once in a while he should meet plenty of people. Students here are generally friendly. I’ve made several acquaintances just by chatting with people in class.

As for diversity, I would say New Paltz is fairly diverse. I expected a bit more diversity, but I also come from a diverse city. For a rural school there’s a nice blend of people.

D is a JR at NP and has had an outstanding experience. She has been challenged academically and made great friends. She is not a partier, but as with almost every college there is a big party scene if you want it, that being said she says she has never felt uncomfortable or been pressured. Prof’s have been great, she is in the process of applying for an undergrad research grant for this summer to work on a project with her Eng. prof on Shakespeare. She is very intellectual, and has found the environment challenging and interesting. The town is very hip and fun. Great to head into NYC for a day, or night. With the budget cuts not sure what will happen, but have noted a decrease in classes in the gym for students.
