I just got my acceptance to Oneonta. I had applied regular decision so, I guess this was very quick. Does Oneonta offer scholarships?

A few years back when I applied to Albany, regular decision, I remember hearing sometime in January because it was rolling I guess, and I submitted my application around November…

I don’t know if that helps anyone. It was also a small envelope, and I found out then that I got a $3,500 scholarship. But I turned it down for Binghamton.

My daughter got a scholarship to Oneonta. I heard Oneonta is one of the most generous SUNY’s in giving out scholarships.

congrats ik0106!

According to Collegeboard.com, New Paltz only accepts 34% of the students. Oneonta can try as hard as they want to be as good as New Paltz and they still won’t have the reputation. My son’s SAT’s were 700 Math and 600 CR. There really is no rhyme or reason for some students being rejected and others accepted. Sometimes it’s just the person who looked at the app. isn’t too bright!

bextreme1…wil your son be attending New Paltz?

It seems to be very individual as to what makes one student love a school and one hate it. My son did not like New Paltz at all when we visited and he didn’t even apply there. Oneonta is his first choice and we have our fingers crossed. He was accepted to Potsdam and we’re waiting for Oswego. His other acceptances offered generous scholarships that brought the cost down to a SUNY tuition, so he has options no matter what.

Good luck to all. I never looked forward to getting the mail so much in my life! (Well maybe since I applied to college!)

Yes, it’s very individual as to what attracts a student to a school. New Paltz tends to be more creative and offbeat and that is not for everyone. Good luck to your son, I hope he finds the right fit for him.

Yes LilyMoon, he is definitely going to New Paltz. I already put down the deposit.

That’s great bextreme1, I’m sure he is going to love it. What will he be majoring in?

still waiting on Oneonta here…but my son got accepted to Oswego today. We are jumping for joy here today!

Just my opinion, it could be that your son’s SAT’s are too high, and Oneonta was guessing that he would have more options, and that he wouldn’t be attending Oneonta. I think it has to do with the acceptance yield, and how many acceptances vs how many actually attend. His SAT’s are highter than the higher average, so I think that can happen. I think they like to keep the yield low, as to look better. With your son’s GPA and SAT’s, there is no reason that he should not be accepted to Oneonta.

Do you think there might be a grudge here?

USNews ranks SUNY New Paltz #43 of schools in the Northeast that offer Masters degrees. It’s '09 acceptance rate was 39.3%. SUNY Oneonta is ranked 45 and its '09 acceptance rate was 37.4%. So actually, Oneonta was more selective than New Paltz with a slightly lower ranking.

No grudge, I wasn’t going to send him there anyway and I guess it depends on which statistic you look at as to what acceptance rates and rankings are. My comments were about the fact that there does not appear to be any rhyme or reason for one being accepted or rejected. Even guidance counselors can’t tell you that a child will be accepted for sure to some schools even though they exceed the “standards”. My son’s guidance counselor thought he would definitely be accepted to oneonta. She’s been a guidance counselor for 17 years. It was actually a “safety” school for us. New Paltz is much closer to where we live and Oneonta is in the middle of nowhere. In the end, it really doesn’t matter which state school one goes to, as no one is waiting at the door to give you a job! They aren’t ivy league schools.

bextreme1–Not trying to pick a fight. My stats are from USNews-usually very reliable.

Oneonta has been trying, the last decade or so, to improve their academic standards and student profile. That is why it has been ranked Tier 1 in the USNews rankings (Northeast schools that offer Masters) for the last 3 years, jumping up significantly in the numbers. People, familiar with Oneonta from the past, are often surprised at where it stands now. The local state senator was quoted as saying, he used to get the most complaints from parents wondering why their kids didn’t get into Cornell. Now he hears the most from parents whose kids were rejected from Oneonta. (NOT saying Oneonta is more selective than Cornell.)
