SUNY or CSULB? Please help.

Hello,

I am trying to gather information on these two universities (Stony Brook University and California State University - Long Beach) for my cousin who will study here as an international student from South Korea.

His major is criminal justice.

Which university would be best for him? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Based on what I have found about the two universities, it seems that SUNY has better academic programs while CSULB has a better campus/social life. Is this true? Also, SUNY is nationally ranked, but CSULB isn't. Is this something I should be concern about?

SUNY seems to be geared towards science majors. Anyone know if their criminal justice program is good?

Any information about these two universities would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Stony Brook University--SUNY | Best College | US News

A question would be, would he be able to immigrate to the US? Seems like a US-centric criminal justice degree would not be too much use in the Republic of Korea, where there are differences in the criminal justice system compared to the US.

Is this a semester or one year exchange, or would he be coming for his full degree?

If it is for an exchange, he should ask students at his university who have participated in the exchange about their experiences. Other factors he might want to consider would be the weather and transportation costs. For example, if he would be planning to spend his school breaks with your family, he might want to choose the university that is closer to your home.
