Which of these two is better for Computer Science Undergraduate? I am preferring Oswego since it is having Software Engineering. I know that Software Engineering is just a name- course is real. Anyway, which is better in courses and which one should I apply for?

How much would either one cost you (cost of attendance - grants&scholarships, NOT minus any loan)?
Have you been admitted to both already?
Where else have you applied/are you applying?

@MYOS1634 I have not applied to any. I have given the October SAT. I am selecting between them for safety. I need to send scores to 4 colleges now to take advantage of Free Score. So, I need to make a decision now.

What’s your budget? Are you an international student or are you a citizen/permanent resident (as it would make a difference as to the admission process and the role of budget).
Do you live in the city and would be commuting, and in that case would you prefer dorming/have the money to live away from home? If you don’t live in the city, do you have enough to find housing (or can you afford The Towers at CCNY)?
What about Fredonia or even Stony Brook or Binghamton?

I had kept Stony Brook as my top preference. I am applying to one of these as safety.

I am a citizen I do not stay in USA. I will settle now starting with college.

@MYOS1634 I am having another confusion. CCNY is showing 10% acceptance whereas having low SAT Scores. How are they actually taking students. Doesn’t SAT Scores matter?

Where do you see CCNY rejecting 90% students? I’m afraid that’s a typo … Acceptance rate should be around 40% CCNY is the best CUNY for CS, but the big problem is housing, which is very costly.
http://ccnytowers.com/
=> dorm, without food, would cost you between 12,000 and 17,000 per year. Add $4,000 for food, $2,000 for books and such.
And these dorm rates are better than other choices around the city, so they go fast.
So, $15,000 tuition if you dont pay in-state costs + 15k (average) for housing + about 4k for the rest = 34-35K per year. Do your parents have that much?
Since you currently live abroad, do you qualify as a city or state resident?

@MYOS1634 Please see the CollegeBoard Bigfuture Website: <a href=“BigFuture College Search”>BigFuture College Search;
I also think it as an anomaly- low sat score and high selectivity.

Can you please advice me which will be the cheapest considering all expenses and also respectable for CS?
I like Stony Brook after researching about it online.
I thought of Buffalo - but I think it requires me to take TOEFL - which I thought I don’t need not being International Student. <a href=“How to Apply as a First-Year Student (Freshman) | Undergraduate Admissions | University at Buffalo”>http://admissions.buffalo.edu/apply/howtoapply.php
“In general, the TOEFL is required of applicants whose native language is not English, and if any portion of their high school studies was completed in a non-English speaking country.”
Do you know any UB student who has a non-English mother tongue? Did he need to give TOEFL?
Please advice me on TOEFL requirement for me.

It is a pity that I am not in-state anywhere in USA.

A big problem with Stony Brook is that it’s heavily suitcase/commuter. If your family’s abroad, it can be rather lonely. Geneseo would be better in that respect, since more students stay on campus.
Why wouldn’t you take the TOEFL? If you’re a native speaker who’s been educated in another language, it means you’re bilingual. Take the TOEFL AND The SAT subject for the language of the country where you’ve been living. Practice the TOEFL iBT’s format for a week to ten days before you take the test.
If you’re not in-state in New York State, why are you applying primarily to the state’s public universities?
What are your stats?
What’s your college list as of now, including your potential safeties, matches, and reaches?
Have you run the Net Price Calculators on each of them?
Would you be interested in some NorthEastern colleges? What country are you living in right now, and would you be interested in colleges located in States that approximate that climate… or absolutely not?

BTW, in North America, teachers ‘give’ tests, and students “take” them.

BTW2: yes the BigFuture information is wrong.

@MYOS1634 Geneseo is demanding high SAT scores.
Is Buffalo also as lonely as Stony Brook?
I am attending an English medium school. Should it not help. Does Stony Brook require TOEFL for my condition?
Is TOEFL required before admission or can it be taken after admission?

I am trying Stony Brook, Buffalo and Oswego(Decision Pending).

Why are you applying only to
What are your stats (SAT score, exam board/type of curriculum…)?
Taking the TOEFL and getting a high score in English in addition to a high SATSubject in a foreign language would boost your chances - not sure why you’re reluctant to do so as there’s no downside.
Geneseo, Binghamton, and Stony Brook would expect similar SAT scores.
If you don’t have family in NYC, then I’d say for your last free choice, choose Oswego.
However I’m not understanding how you selected these SUNY schools if you’re not a NY state resident.

@MYOS1634 Actually, I found that the SUNY’s are comparatively cheap and reputed. The CUNY’s seem to have less reputation. The privates are costly. A SUNY is near $20000 whereas a private is near $40000. My native language is Bengali, which is not having any SAT Subject test. I am giving a thought about TOEFL. But please tell me whether I need to take immediately or can it be taken after colleges ask for it (will colleges admit me and ask to take TOEFL or will the reject me).

Geneseo is a college and SBU is an Research University - so I am considering SBU.

Please tell me will colleges admit me and ask to take TOEFL or will the reject me. This is important because I am willing to apply soon.

Moreover the TOEFL Center of my city - Kolkata, is not offering TOEFL before Dec 6. I want to apply before that to Buffalo, since it is giving scholarships for applications within Dec 1.

You need to have at least a registration date to write on your application at the time you apply and results must be sent within a month (max) of the application deadline. So if you’re applying before Dec1 but are registered for the Dec6 test, just write the date on your application and send the results directly from ETS. Your application will not be considered complete without the TOEFL score.

Private universities may have scholarships. It depends on your parents’ income, budget for college, and on your stats.

The difference between “college” and “research university” (in this case) is that at research universities professors must spend more time doing research and at “colleges” they’re supposed to spend more time with undergraduate students. Therefore, it can be better for undergraduates to attend a college where they’ll be the focus and where they will be taught by professors, rather than by TAs. However a research university may offer you more research opportunities when you’re a junior or senior (in that there will be more research projects but also more students who want to attend there). Geneseo is actually the State’s Honors College.

@MYOS1634 Which college or university do you think is going to be the best for my condition?
I expect to get on SAT:
Maths: Around 700
CR: Around 550
Writing: Around 600

Finance matters. I am from a middle class family.
