suny plattsburgh

Hi,
Anyone have any opinion on Suny Plattsburgh? My son has been accepted with a merit scholarship, we will be visiting in March. Any input would be appreciated.

has you son been accepted/waiting on any other suny schools?

Hi Bran10,
yes he's been accepted to New Paltz and Oneonta, deferred to regular decision at Bing and waiting on Geneseo. Also, applied recently to Suny Buffalo.

I have a friend who graduated SUNY Plattsburgh about 10 years ago. She loved it there, became quite the hippy chick while living there. I think it might have something to do with the close proximity to Vermont.

Aside from that I can't offer much help other than I spent a ton of time up there in my childhood. That is where my Grandparents are from. It is a nice city, close to Canada and the aforementioned Vermont. The lake is great.

Thanks Momof3, yes the town looks nice from the pictures and online tour. He got nice merit money and invite to honors college from Plattsburgh, so far no money from Oneonta or New Paltz. I don't know how important or different one medium size SUNY is to another. What I mean is, a degree from one medium size Suny, be it New Paltz, Oneonta, Plattsburgh or others, if you do well, getting into grad school, would be the same chances? Does it matter where the undergrad degree is from if you do well? Is it more important to get a good GPA at whatever school you attend? Graduating with a bachelor's degree with no loans seems like the way to go. Then, you can afford to go to the grad school of your choice. So confusing.

Bran10, I read your past posts, do you go to Geneseo? My son applied there, we toured and really liked the campus, however, this is a tough year for admissions. I am not counting on acceptance from Geneseo, although if he happens to get in, it will surely rise above the other SUNY choices, merit money or not. He has an 89% average, don't know what that transfers into as far as GPA, and 1240/1600 SATS. Any thoughts on his chances for Geneseo?

yes i'm a freshman transfer student at Geneseo...i was given guaranteed admission for spring 2008...i decided to turn down all my other acceptances at UConn, UMass, Binghamton, Buffalo, New Paltz, Indiana, Pittsburgh,Northeastern because I fell in love with the school when I visited.....It was definitely worth the wait and it is living up to my expectations...Coming from Long Island its definitely a different atmosphere here... its very laid back and the people are really nice... my stats were 1200/1600 92.5 average with a few college courses...admission is only going to get more selective..i have a feeling around 12000 people applied this year...your son is def close to gaining admission...in my opinion admission to Binghamton or Geneseo is a giant step above a merit scholarship to Plattsburgh

My niece is currently a junior @ Plattsburgh, she LOVES IT, she is an art/education major. Loves the proximity to Canada, . She did express to us most of the other SUNYs are in the middle of nowhere and said after 2 or so years it gets old pretty fast so being near a active city is something to consider versus having nowhere to go besides a local stripmall for pizza.

ddotjon: Before I can answer your question regarding the merits of a diploma from one medium SUNY to another can you tell me your son's intended major? I think it is important to note that some SUNYs are more favorably looked upon for certain majors than others.
Bran10 is right in that admission to Geneseo is very tough these days. My D had a few friends that were rejected last year and were in the top 10% of their class, great EC's, etc. However, you do have to look at the earning potential of your son's degree. It is not as simple as saying a degree from this SUNY is more prestigious than a degree from that SUNY. I am currently trying to convince my D of this now, she feels a private school degree is more prestigious in her particular field. I am trying to tell her that graduating with little debt will facilitate her getting into and paying for a wonderful and prestigious grad school. But go figure...

Agree with Momof3stars. An undergrad degree is what one makes of it. I believe it is possible to really excel and stand out at a SUNY. Especially for someone who takes academics seriously, takes some initiative and takes advantage of all the opportunities that are out there. Being able to at least mostly resist the party scene (easily available at all schools, not just the smaller SUNYS!) helps too. Another important thing is to establish close relationships with several faculty members in one's field who will become mentors and be able to write a good letter of rec. and help point you in the right direction. Most of our kids are going to need to go on to grad school and it seems logical that the grad degree will be the more "important" one. If a great undergrad experience can be had at state prices, especially with some nice merit aid, why not save some $ for grad school?

We went through the dilema of SUNY no debt vs. private with large debt just last year at this time! D was of the mindset the CMU would add prestige to her BFA, but decided on SUNY NP after speaking to her teachers, counselors, parents about the debt issue. She is at SUNY New Paltz honors..she will graduate pretty much debt free and be able to study abroad which was her deciding factor. She felt that NP offered the best studio art dept, one of the only SUNY to offer BFA. I know that Geneseo is well respected nationally, but for those interested in art, music, drama, imo, there are better SUNY options. She loves NP and is getting a great education so far.

New Paltz is a nice school...we visited and son was accepted...we both liked it..Momof3..his intended major is???? possibly math?accounting???secondary ed/math??? not sure at this point...if he ends up at a SUNY I think he is leaning towards New Paltz, we are going to visit Plattsburgh in March. I am not sure how New Paltz is as far as math, I know it has a great rep for english/arts.

Plattsburgh accepts any and everyone, and everyone. I suggest he go to Binghamton. I currently go to Plattsburgh and have been desperately trying to transfer for three years. Hell, I studied abroad in Beijing for a year just to get away from this place.

As long as your grades are good and you know a professor or two well enough to get a decent recommendation, it's easy to transfer. What seems to be the problem that's been blocking you transferring?

Oh, and if you're visiting during Spring Open house, I may be your tour guide. ;)

I went to grad school @ SUNY Plattsburgh. I, like some other posters, loved the school. I has the feel of a LAC, and I really liked the setting - gorgeous Lake Champlain and Montreal a little more than one hour away.

In regards to reputation, I can tell you that I see very little difference between the mid-size SUNY campuses. If you leave the State of NY, as I did, most people would not know the difference between Potsdam, Plattsburgh, Oneonta, or Oswego! They would recognize, however, that you graduated from a SUNY school - which is not a bad thing.
