Is any one knows The Crane School of Music in SUNY-Potsdam? What about this school? My Instrument is piano, and I want to apply this school.

This is a well recognized school. From other posts you’ve written, you stated that you are a classical pianist, and this may be a better match for you than a school like Berklee, who judged your jazz improvising skills as well as your classical piano skills. I only know a vocalist and a clarinet player that attended or are attending and they all rave about it and their experience there. Read up on the audition requirements from Crane’s website and you’ll see if you need to tap into other private lesson knowledge to get ready.

My D is a student in the Crane school and from my name you can probably figure out what she plays. She has nothing but glowing reports and feelings about the whole college but especially about Crane. I know nothing about the piano program but if it is anything like hers then it is top notch and very well respected. From a parents point of view we really feel like she is treated like a person and not a number. I would highly suggest that you at look into it. It may not be everyone but it is the best place for my D and she had other offers. Good Luck

Crane has an excellent piano department. Paul Wyse Eugenia Tsarov are on the faculty, both of whom I’ve heard very good things about. I know a few fellow pianists who go there, and they have been very happy with their training thus far. They were accepted to other conservatories and top notch university programs, some with merit even, but chose to go to Crane because they felt it would provide the same level of training at a much lower cost (for NY residents anyway). One thing to consider, however, is that Music Education is HUGE at Crane, and although the performance program is strong, several students at the school are pursuing Music Ed or Music Ed/Performance dual degrees. Another thing to consider is that Potsdam is pretty isolated and far away from any major cities, if location is of any importance to you.

allegrovivace is right saying that Crane is very strong in Music ED. My D is one of those taking the double major of Ed and Performance. Potsdam is rather secluded and in the middle of nowhere but my D loves it. Like she says, there are very few distractions and yet there is always something to do. Go to the Crane website and take a look at the calendar of events, that would help give you an idea. Last year they had Manhattan Transfer for the opening weekend concert then at Christmas they had the Vienna Boys Choir. We are fortunate that even though we are from Canada we are only 2 hours away and can make all of her concerts and still be home in bed by midnight. The biggest problem we found with the location is transportation to and from Potsdam. We ended up buying her a used car because as I said it is 2 hour drive but it is 20 hours by bus.

Yes, just like you said, Crane may be a better match for me than a school like Berklee. And besides it, I’m still searching the school which provide a good program of Piano. Do you have any suggestion about it?

Hi, Percussiondad. I’m glad to hear what you said. I want to major in Musical Stuides. But I’m not sure if it is a good choice.

I’m actually writing this about 10 minutes from Crane, got here about an hour ago.

I want to major in Musical Stuides in Crane. But I’m not sure if it is a good choice. Do you know about this major in Crane?

Hi SnowflakeVT! I’m considering applying to SUNY Potsdam for the classical voice major (I’m a mezzo-soprano) - you mentioned that you know a vocalist there, may I know what she thinks about the voice department there? Is there a certain school culture there or any particular musical styles that Crane SOM is more specialised in?

I remember seeing how the voice audition calls for 5 pieces (the most I’ve seen in all the schools I’ve tried; most places call for 2-3) and then I thought, there has to be something about this school!

Any other information regarding the teaching and experience there would be great!

Shu1994, my son is currently attending Crane as a music ed/performance major on Double Bass. His vocalist friends seem happy sometimes more so than the instrumentalists. Last Spring the Crane Chorus and Symphony Orchestra performed at Lincoln Center which was an incredible experience for all. They have funding to bring a conductor of note each year and money for travel to major performance venues every other year.
Crane is in the far Northern part of NY in a rural college town. Students from Potsdam and Clarkson swell the population each fall and the town loves its students. Every Fall the town has an opening weekend block party called First Saturday for the students. There are about 4000 students at Potsdam and 650 are at Crane. You will take about one non Crane course each semester to fulfill your general ed credits. (You can double major in something from the liberal arts school but it will take longer than 4 years.) Crane students are very active and you will have more performance opportunities than you can possibly squeeze in if you join any of the student run groups: Jazz- Singing with Swing, Opera Ensemble, Musical Theatre Organization, several a capella groups, etc.
Son has found that the other music students are very helpful. They share instruments, and help each other with tutoring, etc. It is a pretty intense music environment which is probably true of other music schools. Friends of his have struggled with the academic side of music in courses such as aural skills and theory even those with very strong academic backgrounds. Most of the day is spent in the school of music starting at 8 am and ending sometimes as late as 9:30 depending on studios, ensembles and rehearsals.

I know someone who grew up in Potsdam. She knows the voice faculty quite well and speaks highly of them. I have an audition there this week and I hope it will go well (I’m a soprano).

herranrukous: Good luck with your audition and safe travels. The weather forecast is for snow and ice so leave lots of time to get to your destination.

The vocalist I know was a “he” and I only know they he felt supported in the program and he was very proud to be there, I did not ask him specific questions about the classes or instructors.

Good luck with your audition. We have a few friends who go there and some of them are vocal/MusEd majors. It is an EXTREMELY competitive program to get into. It is a very old conservatory within a state school, so it is very popular and cost effective. One friend who is there now did not get in as a freshman. He chose then to go to SUNY Fredonia for two years, get his skills up and was accepted into Crane after that. He is very happy with the program.

Whoa, words of caution for anyone thinking that a school is “better” or “special” because they require more pieces for an audition than others: It means nothing and in fact, may indicate that the faculty of this department might not be as knowledgeable as other schools. No potential undergrad should have to have to sing more than 3 pieces at an entrance audition, and if a panel can’t hear what they need to within those parameters they shouldn’t be sitting in judgement at all. It simply doesn’t take that long.
One conservatory has decided to require ten pieces for its VP applicants to grad school. Is it any wonder that they’ve not gotten enough applications to fill the open spots and keep extending their deadline?!
Remember, Bigger or More Expensive is not necessarily better!
