For those who attend a SUNY schol, specifically Binghamton or Stony Brook...
How is the need based financial aid? I really want to attened one of the schools but as cheap as it already is, I still cant afford it.

SBUAdmissions -- I have a S at SUNY Buffalo, who likes it a lot. He's an out-of-state freshman and we were thrilled with the scholarship he was offered. He has reported great activities, making lots of friends, good academic opportunities for research, colloquium, etc., interesting classes, and decent food/housing. (The free laundry and parking passes are nice too.)

I have a question about the College Exchange program. Is the SUNY system participating in the College Exchange program? I'd love to encourage him to do a semester or even summer school in Wyoming, California or Maine down the road, as a possible cheaper option to a semester abroad. Tuition arrangements through College Exchange can be a really good deal. I saw that Buffalo College is listed on the College Exchange site, and don't know if that means its a program that others in the state system can access.

Also -- does the fact that a student did his/her undergrad work within SUNY carry any weight when applying to SUNY grad schools?

On the Purchase vs. Fredonia debate, one of the things that helps people decide is that Fredonia offers music education, while there is no music education program at Purchase.

Just to jump in here, Purchase has an excellent Journalism program with excellent students in the major. We even have newspaper wars...

Bazcat89, do you have any info on or impressions of the Creative Writing Program?

I disagree with Geneseo being the prettiest campus- Oswego blows it away, it's nestled on the edge of lake Ontario and is absolutely gorgeous,

I had planned on linking to the SUNY Oswego webcam, but I see it has been disabled until Spring (May?).

Oswego looks great during half of the year, but you can have it during the winter months. This is just one opinion, of course, but it is an opinion based on first hand experience. My sister is an Oswego grad and I earned my MA at Syracuse. That part of Upstate New York is as beautiful as anyplace in the country during the fall, but I'm glad I don't have to suffer through winter up there anymore.

You'd think that as a Geneseo alumnus I'd be biased toward it being the prettiest campus, but I'd give that honor to Delhi, actually.

Word is that North Country Community College is gorgeous, but it's one of the few campuses I haven't been to yet (and there are only about eight or ten of the 64 that I haven't visited).

Actually, everyone in my "group," so to speak, is a Creative Writing major. The program seems pretty solid, and seems to be filled with a lot of motivated, talented kids. I know there's one professor whom students take issue with--something about his teaching style--but otherwise it seems like a good program. Hope that helped!

When D and I visited Purchase, we were told that the Creative Writing program was "semi-conservatory," but the session moved fast and we didn't get to ask for clarification on what that meant. I'm guessing that it means there is a planned program of courses that all the freshmen (and others) take so the group sticks together. How totally off base am I???!!!! Thanks!

Well, all of the Creative Writing students know each other, but the only classes they have together are the ones relating to their major. According to my roommate (a Creative Writing major) it is not part of the Conservatory, but I'm not entirely sure. If you or your daughter had a livejournal account, I suggest that you post your questions here: Purchase Community You may find some people who are able to answer your questions a bit more comprehensively than I can. Best of luck!

Good idea, thanks, bazcat89!

I graduated in 1982 from SUNY-Binghamton with a sociology major; moved out of state and went to law school; now am practicing law quite happily in Pennsylvania. I think I got an excellent education there which has stood me in good stead all my life, and the instate tuition was a great deal.

How does a student's acceptance rate to a premed program after attending Geneseo compare with that of a student from a comparable or "most selective" nonpublic school? Is there any source to check this data?

purchase is definitely the best SUNY school for arts (visual and performing) in all respects

mattman - I would never say "all respects." That's an enormous overgeneralization, and a dangerous one.

Chris

How do you think of :
Geneseo vs Hobart and william Smith in liberal arts,
Binghamton vs U Minnedota /Miami(OH)/U Delaware in engineering and science?

PS:I am an international student, so I should pay out of state tuition for all..
