So I'm aware that the FAFSA for prospective Fall 2015 undergraduates cannot be submitted before January 1st, but I read that you can get your FAFSA pin early. So I put in my information and signed up for a FAFSA pin. It says that I can start the 2014-2015 FAFSA now? How can that be if it's not supposed to be made available until Jan. 1st, 2015? As an current senior going through the admissions process, should I be completely the 2015-16 FAFSA, or the 2014-15 FAFSA? Also, will signing up for the pin early affect me at all?

Obviously I have no idea what I'm doing. I definitely qualify for significant aid so I hope I didn't mess it up...

^^^This. The 2014-2015 FAFSA is available now, but that’s for applicants who are in college right now (or will be in the spring of 2015). If you are a high school senior, you want to complete the 2015-2016 FAFSA, which won’t be available until January 1, 2015.

Haha, ok thanks for the clarification. I am so clueless when it comes to applying for financial aid. So is it alright if my parents and I signed up for a FAFSA pin now? I can just record the pin numbers in a safe place and then login to fafsa.ed.gov after Jan. 1st and fill out the 2015-16 FAFSA?

Starting next year, the Dept. of Ed will actually be moving away from the requirement to apply for a PIN and the student/parent will be prompted to create their own individual username and password. This is likely to be implemented in April 2015. So for students having to make FAFSA corrections or filling out late FAFSAs after that April date, they won’t need to use the PIN anymore.
