DD took SAT last fall. Scored 1500. Just took in school and improved one section by 10 points, other went down 50…
Is it worth superscoring to get 1510…or more impressive to have 1500 in one sitting?
She’s not gunning for super elites if that matters.
Does she have better things to do?
In her mind —always something better to do! And I doubt this will make or break any decisions…
But she has to send score reports for EA apps (a few schools need official at time of app, not self-reported).
Wondering if 800/700 in one test is better then 800/710 super score.
Unlikely in non super selective schools. Even in super selective schools. However, no one can be 100% sure where lines are drawn. Doubt very much you’ll get an AO that says they draw such lines. They specifically deny it.
It’s an awful lot of time and trouble to retest when there are so many other things to do. Unless there is a scholarship or something that draws such lines where she would get $x vs $y or zero dollars, I would not advise it, but, yeah, it’s possible in a situation it could make a difference. It’s a matter of whether she thinks it’s worth it for the probabilities.
A lot of applicants will not have it not report test scores this year, more so than in a while. She’s reporting hers, and they are solid good scores. What category of schools interests her? Is she going for merit money?
Thank for the replies @cptofthehouse
Sorry I wasn’t clear…she’s already taken the tests. Now need to report scores,
Last fall was 800/700. This Sept was 740/710. Thinking a Superscore of 1510 is better then one sitting of 1500?
She is looking for merit (“couponl per J Selingo). Interested in Jesuit/Catholic schools. Villanova is her biggest reach — realize no money there.
Villanova does have merit scholarships. So do any number of Catholic schools. I suggest she check into a number of them. If she goes to a Catholic d hook now, her GC can give you past schools, particularly Catholic ones that have come up with scholarships
Check out the Fordham Net price Calculator, as it will Tell you what merit she can expect to get. Run it twice, one with the test scores she has now and again with scores 10 points higher and see if there is a difference in awards.
We are in the exact same boat as you (posted elsewhere on CC). Trying to decide if a 10 superscore bump is worth revealing a large drop in math. The two pieces of advice I got were split. She is leaning towards reporting both, but I would love more feedback.
I don’t think sending two scores vs. sending one score is a big undertaking.
If a school superscores, I don’t know why you wouldn’t send it. It’s minor, but 1510>1500. There are no bonuses that I’ve heard of for “first time” or “at the same time”. At least a couple AOs I’ve spoken with say they only see the score, per their policy - superscoring is a clerical/automated function before they see it.
I don’t know if this is consistent. But if not, then they see the single 1500 anyway, if you think it provides an advantage.
Thank you
If you already have the test scores, send them both to schools that super score.
Question was whether it’s worth it to retest in hopes of matching 10 point bump on a practice test. The returns on that are less unless a school draws a line at that 10 point score for something. A lot of times they won’t tell you so you are shooting in the dark.
I read “in school” to mean the School Day SAT offered September 23rd which came out the day of the post
Even for a super selective, they’re looking for the highest individual scores. If you can send both, they’d see 800/710.
