Superstitious?

I’m just curious to see if anybody is superstitious about their decision. I know I am. I’m not typically superstitious but I guess I’m just searching for any sign of good hope. For example: Yesterday my dad saw a sale on foosball tables and bought one. When we set it up we realized that it was made by a company called Harvard. Then today I was downloading some software and the company that made it was called Veritas. I also threw a coin up in the air and said “heads i’m in, tails deffered, neither rejected” It landed heads and I haven’t touched it since in fear that it’s magic will be lost. I also refuse to wash my Harvard sweatshirt which I bought on campus a month ago for fear that it will lose it’s “original harvard-ness” which would be lost in the washing, but could give me some luck. I also refuse to wear it in fear of jinxing myself. I also will not speak of any acceptances that may come my way for fear of jinxing myself, and if I accidentally do I will knock on wood. Just thought it would be funny to see what other people think.

i know exactly what you mean... i've forced ppl to start telling me that i'm going to be rejected, just so that they don't jinx me by trying to make me feel better about myself and my chances.

i have a vodoo doll that i control in the likeness of an adcomm...enuff said

Haha, I can top those superstitions--I, for one, refused to even buy a Harvard sweatshirt in the first place. I'm convinced that would obliterate my chances of acceptance, because, let's face it: Who wants to wear the sweatshirt of a school that rejected him/her? I figure that if I owned a Harvard sweatshirt, nalgene, or the like, I would definitely not get in, since I'd be stuck with all the stuff afterward.

My other superstition--my parents are Harvard alum, so we have several Harvard chairs in our house. I refuse to sit in them.

Ah, superstition, foopertition. I'm going into impatient mode, so I'm not thinking too much about superstition. But, I do, like sunglasses, refuse to by a Harvard sweatshirt. :P

wow your parents are harvard alum?
you don't need to be supersitious

Tennisdude: I am leary of the propaganda that legacy helps--I've had several friends who were Harvard and Yale legacies who didn't get in last year--but hey, we'll see.

And good, Liselle, I'm glad someone else shares that form of paranoia too!

Sunglasses, do your parents push you to go to Harvard?

Hahaha. My story is a bit eerie, actually... A week or so ago, I had a total anxiety attack about the decision... It was bad. Anyway, that night my mother and I were running some errands or something, and while we were driving we passed by a forklift that said "Yale" on it. And then when I got home, I was changing to go to sleep. And it turns out that my PE shorts from like middle school were also made by a company named "Yale." This past Saturday, I went to a math competition. I told myself that if I won(like I have won for the past three years running) I would get into Harvard, if I didn't win but placed I would get deferred, and if I didn't place at all I'd get rejected. I got third place at that competition. So... I dunno. LOL.

did you apply to Yale?

pjv--

Actually, when I was younger, my mom would tell me how many problems Harvard had/how awful it was, and then about a year ago, she changed her tune and it's now like the only school she thinks would be suitable. Yeah, I don't know...it's weird.

My dad is pretty low-key about it (haha, in fact, he kind of wanted me to look at Yale briefly). My grandparents (who also went there) told me to go wherever I want, but that they'd prefer Harvard, because they love visiting Boston lol.

I've thought a lot about the whole legacy thing though--I want to make sure I go to a school because I want to go there, not because of what other people want for me. I think I would've wanted to go to Harvard regardless of the legacy thing though, so yeah.

Sorry for being so long-winded!

Hm... I'm applying to Yale, if the news isn't good Tuesday... And if the forklift and PE shorts are any indication, I might just fare well. LOL.

I'll tell you guys my stories after Tuesday.

Yeah, that's how superstitious and paranoid I feel at the moment.

Wow. You have Harvard in your blood.

Lol, don't jinx me! ;)

i'm quite surprised to hear how so many of us harvard applicants/associates have these unfounded superstitions.. i must admit though.. i'm one of em too

i have always had this superstition with a certain number that is "given" to me.. usually a larger number for something harder. i only do this when taking some big test or something.. sat's, all state auditions, harvard application. this time the number was 21 (previous high was 7) and corresponds to this- 21 people have to explicitly wish me "good luck"... except that i cant tell them that i want them to say that or lead them to say it. i got 23 today :)
the 5-6 times i've used this superstition of mine, i've always been right so far. i certainly hope i'm right this time

bellared- LOL. wow.. you had me laughing so hard for at least 3 whole minutes there.. my abs are aching now xD!!

i'll keep my other superstitions to myself for the time being :P

so incredibly paranoid and nervous at the moment.

if dreams are any indication then i will be rejected. i dream about that every night.

when the red sox were down 3-0 to the yankees, i said that if they win the series, id get into harvard....the sox did their part, now its my turn to hold up my end of the bargain :)

i've been knocking on wood so much this week it's crazy. I even have a piece of wood in my car for those times you just need one.

I remember when I was crazy about Yale. One day I was on the bus thinking about Yale and when i look up lo and behold there is this huge forklift with "YALE" on the side. Ok I thought..weird. Then, when I get home and check the mail, I have a letter from Yale. Later on, I turned on the tv and before any picture had come up, I heard "graduate of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Later that day, I go to pick up some pizza and in the parking lot another one of those (but smaller) lifts comes and parks next to the car..the words "YALE" all up in my face. Next morning, when I woke up, the first words I heard to start the day were "Yale University" on the radio. Weird? Hell yes! Mean anything? ehh prob not since Wharton is my #1 now and I hear "UPENN" and "WHARTON" everywhere I go....
